BERKELEY, Calif. -
The UC San Diego men's basketball team gave No. 24 Cal all it could handle for much of the first half, but ultimately suffered an 88-53 defeat in an exhibition game against the Golden Bears on Tuesday night at Haas Pavilion.
Justin Cobbs led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting for Cal, while Allen Crabbe finished with 14 points, Jeff Powers put in 12 and Harper Kamp added 10.
Senior center Christian Hatch scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to lead the Tritons, while sophomore point guard Matt Bailey finished with nine points and three assists and sophomore guard MacKenzie McCullough added eight points and five boards off the bench.
UCSD shot just 31.3% (15-48) from the field for the game, but converted 14-of-17 free throws in the first half to keep things close. Cal shot 48.5% (32-66) from the floor, including a blistering 61% in the second half after hitting only 40% of its shots in the opening period.
The Tritons were the better team early on as Ryan Peters drained a three to put UCSD in front 10-7. Four straight points from Hatch gave the Tritons an 18-12 advantage with 11:06 left in the first half and a pair of free throws from Dylan Bohanan gave UCSD its biggest lead at 21-14 a minute later.
The Golden Bears then answered with an 11-3 run over the next three and a half minutes to take a 25-24 lead with six and a half minutes left. After two free throws from Bailey gave the lead back to the Tritons at 28-27, Cobb answered with two at the line on the other end and Cal went on to close the half on a 14-4 spurt to take a 41-32 halftime advantage.
Cal outscored UCSD 22-4 over the first six and a half minutes of the second half and never looked back.
The Golden Bears held a 41-34 rebounding advantage and outscored UCSD 44-10 in the paint.
Hatch was 6-of-15 from the field, while Bailey finished 3-for-5. Senior forward Mike Meza went 2-for-3 with a pair of triples and finished with eight points.
UCSD was without starters Justin Brue and James McCann once again as both players sat out a second straight game with injuries.
The Tritons will open the 2011-12 regular season this weekend at the Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim. UCSD will square off against Chestnut Hill, Western Washington and Dominican Friday through Sunday, respectively, looking to capture its second consecutive Disney Classic title.
