LA JOLLA, Calif. -
The UC San Diego Athletics Department on Tuesday announced a partnership with ESPN Radio 1700 that will carry 16 Triton men's basketball games live locally during the 2011-12 season.
Beginning with UCSD's home opener against California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday, November 22, ESPN 1700 will broadcast a total of 12 home games and four road contests this season, marking the first time UCSD basketball will air on terrestrial radio.
Craig Elsten, who is entering his third season as the voice of Triton basketball during UCSD's online broadcasts, will serve as play-by-play announcer, while Jack Cronin, Executive Producer at XX Sports 1090 and ESPN 1700 in San Diego, will handle the color commentary duties.
UC San Diego's agreement with ESPN 1700 will also feature a weekly appearance by head coach Chris Carlson on the Coach John Kentera show, which airs Monday through Friday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on XX 1090. Carlson will debut on the Coach Kentera show this Wednesday at 8:15 p.m.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with the University of California San Diego," Tex Meyer, the Vice President and General Manager at ESPN Radio 1700, said of the agreement. "The pairing of 1700 ESPN and Triton basketball is a winning combination and the staff at ESPN 1700 looks forward to serving UCSD and its fan base in Southern California."
Carlson, who is now in his fifth season as head coach of the Tritons, was equally excited about the partnership with ESPN 1700.
"We're very pleased that fans in San Diego will be able to listen to our games this year," Carlson said. "We play in one of the best Division II conferences in the country and I think people will be genuinely pleased with all that UCSD Basketball and the CCAA has to offer."
Elsten is a longtime radio personality in San Diego and currently serves as the media relations director and play-by-play broadcaster of the San Diego Sockers. A UC San Diego alum, Elsten is the founder and primary contributor at 619Sports.net and has served as the voice of Triton Talk, UCSD's weekly online radio show, since 2009.
Cronin is in his fourth year as the host of the San Diego Padres Pregame and the "College Football Gameday" shows on XX 1090, while also serving as the voice of University of San Diego football and San Diego State baseball broadcasts. A 2005 graduate from the University of California, Cronin returns to UCSD after previously serving as the play-by-play announcer for Triton men's and women's basketball broadcasts during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
After finishing with an overall record of 11-17 in 2010-11, the Tritons got off to a great start this season, going 2-1 in three games at the Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic November 4-6 to capture the tournament crown for the second consecutive year. UCSD defeated Chestnut Hill College and Dominican, while falling to Western Washington during the three-day event in Anaheim.
The Tritons will square off with Cal State San Bernardino in their CCAA opener on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at RIMAC Arena. They Coyotes were picked to finish second in the conference's preseason coaches' poll last month.
