The Tritons are joined by 17 other participating team ranging from Division I nationally ranked squads to Division III. Claremont Mudd-Scripps, University of La Verne and Pomona Pitzer Colleges will host the annual Convergence Tournament, which will be held at three different pools. The tournament has traditionally been a battle between the east and west, as well as having a high number of SCIAC conference teams in attendance. Unlike many of the tournaments UCSD has attended to this point, it is not in championship bracket format.
UCSD will meet up with the Poets to open tournament play. Whittier currently holds a 4-5 (.444) overall record. Four of their nine games came from the Cal Lutheran Invite Mar. 2-3 were they went 1-3 posting the single victory over University of La Verne. Whittier most recently dropped a 7-6 decision to Villanova at home to extend to a two game losing streak.
The Regals enter the weekend at 3-9 after playing six games this past weekend, hosting the Sixth Annual Posada Royale Tournament in Thousand, Oaks, Calif. CLU started strong, going 2-0 the opening day with wins over Villanova and Pomona-Pitzer. The Regals dropped the next three games, and then ended the long weekend with a 9-7 win over Whittier. Cal Lutheran is currently 0-3 when matched up with WWPA opponents this season.
The Panthers enter the weekend with just four games under their belt as they hold a 2-2 record. Chapman will look to get one more game in before the weekend as they host Villanova on Wednesday, Mar. 6 as its home opener. The Panthers went 2-2 at the Convergence in 2012, as they finished the season with a 14-12 winning record. UCSD currently hold a 7-0 all-time record when playing the Panthers.
As a hosting squad, the Athenas hold a 10-6 record the past four years in the Convergence. Entering the weekend, CMS sits at 5-8 overall with three wins coming from this past weekend at Cal Lutheran. The season is highlighted with a 10-8 overtime win over Colorado State at the Brown Invite on Feb. 9.
Freshman goalie Courtney Miller broke into the 100's at the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 23-24, knocking down 39 saves to bring her season total up to 110. Miller added another 20 over the weekend with games against Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine at home to bring her season total to 130. With two-thirds of the season remaining, Miller could possibly break into the programs Single-Season top 10.
Jolene Guiliana leads the team in both assists and steals, at 24 and 25 respectively. These marks also rank her in the top five among the leading WWPA performers.
UC SAN DIEGO ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Alexis Wieseler received her first award at a Triton, earning UC San Diego Athlete of the Week on Monday, Mar. 4 for her performance over the weekend. Wieseler scored a career-high seven goals to lead the 17th-ranked Tritons to an 11-10 victory over conference foe Loyola Marymount on Friday. The win kept UCSD undefeated in WWPA play at 3-0. As the primary two-meter defender, Wieseler returned to the pool Sunday and scored a team-high three goals against No. 7 UC Irvine, adding two field blocks on defense. Wieseler is now second on the team with 25 goals. The Tritons play in the Claremont Convergence tourney this Friday and Saturday.
Sarah Lizotte was named KAP7 WWPA Player of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The Riverside native is the first member of the Triton roster to receive the weekly honor this season, as the team was just one week into the 2013 campaign. Lizotte compiled 13 goals, five assists and five steals over the course of the weekend at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. Her single-game high came in 11-6 win over conference opponent Sonoma State, where Lizotte posted six goals respectively. Lizotte also received UCSDtritons.com Player of the Week honors for the week on Jan. 28.
