SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Following a strong second round Monday, the UC San Diego men's golf team is sitting in second place out of 16 squads at the Sonoma State Invitational at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. Two Tritons are among the top 10 individuals heading into Tuesday's third and final round.

After shooting a 302 in Monday's opening round, UCSD improved by 17 strokes and fired a 285 in the second round for a total of 587, 11-over par. Triton golfers totaled 28 birdies on the day and were a combined 6-under on par-5 holes. Both numbers ranked second among all teams.

On the individual leaderboard, Jay Lim is seventh and Jacob Williams is tied for eighth for UCSD. Lim shot a 2-over 146 with a 76 in the first round and a 70 in the second. Williams shot 78-69 for a 3-over 147. Just out of the top 10, Clayton Yamaguchi is tied for 11th (73-75--148, +4). Lewis Simon is tied for 20th (79-71--150, +6) and Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) is tied for 22nd (75-76--151, +7).

"There were lots of bright spots today," said first-year UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "We got off to a rough start, but played well in the second round with Jay, Jacob and Lewis all shooting under par. Overall, it was a good team effort with noticeable improvement and we are looking forward to tomorrow."

Frontrunner Sonoma State holds a comfortable 16-stroke lead, shooting 284-287 for a 5-under 571. No. 6 Cal State Monterey Bay (595, +19) is in third, California University of Pennsylvania (597, +21) is fourth and Cal State East Bay (603, +27) and Northwest Nazarene are tied for fifth.

Sonoma State owns four of the top five individual slots, with Matt Medeiros leading the pack with a 3-under 141. Teammate Alex Marry is one stroke behind and Nick Hardy of Northwest Nazarene is two strokes back. The three are the only players in the 74-man field under par.

Last season at the Sonoma State Invitational, UCSD was fourth after the first day of play and ended up finishing third. Yang tied for eighth as the Tritons' top golfer.

The third and final round gets underway Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on the par-72, 6,733-yard layout at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club.
