LA JOLLA, Calif. – Adam Klie scored a career-high 19 points and James McCann scored 14 points and dished out eight assists as UC San Diego beat Academy of Art 77-59 Saturday at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons had four players score in double-digits and shot 49 percent from the floor for their second straight victory.
UCSD improves to 3-1 overall on the year, while AAU falls to 1-4 with the loss.
After the Urban Knights opened the game with five straight points, the Tritons gained control of the contest by running off a 29-13 stretch. McCann started the run with a three to put UCSD on the scoreboard before Klie and MacKenzie McCullough each drained treys to put the Tritons ahead 29-18.
UCSD ended the first half with a 37-30 advantage, powered by five three-pointers from the Tritons on 13 attempts. McCann nailed a pair of treys in the half, while Klie scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds before intermission. As a team, UCSD shot 14-for-31 (45.2%) and forced eight turnovers in the half.
The Urban Knights came out in the second half strong and cut the Triton lead to seven, 53-46, with 11:37 remaining before a 20-7 run by UCSD sealed the game. The Tritons grabbed their biggest lead of the game of 22 points, 75-53, at the 3:52 mark following a pair of free throws from Kevin Harris. The run was started by a jumper from McCann and highlighted by a steal and dunk from Klie.
The Tritons earned the 77-59 win by shooting 54 percent from the floor in the second half (13-24), led by nine points in the period from Klie.
To complement Klie’s 19 points and McCann’s 14, Drew Dyer scored 15 points and Hunter Walker added 10. McCullough grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Klie finished with eight boards and Walker recorded seven rebounds.
The Tritons received 23 points off the bench compared to the Urban Knights’ nine, while the rebounding effort was won by AAU 43-38.
Academy of Art was led by a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds from Alexis Moore. Alex Cameron also scored 13 points and Aaron Aikman tallied 10 points in the loss, respectively.
UCSD travels to conference opponents Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona next week. The Tritons take on the Jacks on Dec. 5 before facing the Broncos on Dec. 7. Tip-off for both contests is slated for 7:30 p.m.
