WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego's James McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league.
McCann helped pace UCSD to a pair of critical CCAA victories on the road this past week.
In a 66-64 win at Chico State, the senior point guard recorded a game-high 23 points and four assists. His biggest assist came in the final second of the game. With the score tied at 64-64, McCann inbounded the ball to teammate Drew Dyer, who hit a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the victory to UCSD.
The next night, McCann had a game-high six assists and a team-high 16 points to help lift the Tritons to a 67-65 win at Cal State Stanislaus.
UCSD is the only team in the CCAA to have swept that road trip this season.
For the week, McCann led the Tritons in scoring, assists, free throws made, free throws attempted and free throw percentage and was second in three-pointers made and rebounds. He averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
It is the second CCAA Player of the Week honor for McCann this season as he also earned the accolade on Jan. 28. He is the only player in the league to win the award multiple times this year.
UCSD plays another pair of conference road games this week, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Feb. 14 (7 p.m.), and Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Feb. 15 (7:30 p.m.). The Tritons are 12-8 overall and 8-8 in league play, one game out of the sixth and final conference tournament spot.
