LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team has signed four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The announcement was made Friday by head coach Heidi VanDerveer.
Haley Anderson, a 5-8 guard/forward from El Dorado Hills; McKenzie Bolden, a 5-5 guard from Atlanta; Hannah Johnson, a 5-11 forward/center from Saratoga; and Taylor Tanita, a 5-6 guard from Culver City will commence their Triton careers as true freshmen during the 2013-14 season.
Anderson is in her senior year at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, where she earned the school's Athlete of the Year Award for the past three seasons. A 2011-12 All-Delta River League First Team selection as a junior, she averaged 6.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. In addition, Anderson was named a 2012 Sacramento Metro Area Honorable Mention. During her sophomore year, she was a member of the 2010 Division I State Championship Team. Her positive attitude also earned Anderson the San Joaquin Section Championship Sportsmanship Award.
"Haley is an excellent competitor," said VanDerveer. "She is a physical guard with good skills that gets out in transition, can shoot the three and attacks the basket. Her Oak Ridge team won a state championship and that experience and understanding of what it takes to win is invaluable."
Bolden was a member of the 5A All-Region Team, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-State Honorable Mention and made All-North Metro First Team while at Holy Innocents Episcopal School. During her junior year, Bolden averaged 15 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game while playing for the Golden Bears.
"Though small in stature, McKenzie plays more like a power forward but with the skills of a point/shooting guard," commented VanDerveer. "She has a positive court personality and her energy and dedicated work ethic fit perfectly with the character of our team."
Johnson will join the Tritons after earning accolades such as league MVP, Saratoga High School Athlete of the Year and All-Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) First Team. She averaged a double-double over her junior season, scoring 16.9 points and grabbing 12.6 rebounds per game. Johnson also contributed 1.2 assists and 5.1 steals per game. The All-SCVAL First Team honor was Johnson's second as her first was earned as a sophomore.
"Hannah brings versatility at the forward position," said VanDerveer. "Her fundamental abilities inside and her passing skills are an excellent complement to our offense, while her presence on the boards will help us in the rebounding department. When Hannah came for her official visit, it was instantly clear that she was a natural all-around fit for our program."
Tanita has played all four years of her career at the varsity level while additionally serving as team captain for both her basketball and volleyball teams. As a junior, Tanita led Culver City to an undefeated league season (10-0) en route to All-CIF First Team and Ocean League MVP honors. During her sophomore year, Tanita made All-Ocean League Second Team as well as the All-Inglewood Tournament Team. Also a standout in the classroom, she holds membership in the California Scholastic Federation and is a four-year Scholar-Athlete.
"Taylor is a true point guard who has a tremendous feel for the game and excellent instincts," said VanDerveer. "She has the unique ability to put her teammates in positions to be successful while controlling the tempo of the game. Her skills complement our style perfectly. Taylor is a complete guard who will be fun to work with as coaches, great to play with as teammates and exciting to watch as fans."
UCSD, which won its opening pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association games last week, plays at Cal State Bernardino on Sunday, Dec. 16 (3 p.m.) before hosting the Coyotes at RIMAC Arena on Sunday, December 30 (4 p.m.).
