Release: Tuesday 10/29/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2013-14 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season standings according to the league's annual preseason coaches poll, released Tuesday.

Chico State was chosen to repeat as the league's regular season champion, garnering 112 points and seven first-place votes. Cal Poly Pomona was second with 101 points and four first-place votes, while Cal State L.A. rounded out the top three, totaling 90 points.

UCSD earned 86 points for its fourth-place prediction. The Tritons were followed by Cal State East Bay (5th, 80 points), Cal State Dominguez Hills (6th, 78 points), Cal State San Bernardino (7th, 77 points, one first-place vote), Humboldt State (8th, 44 points), Cal State Monterey Bay (T-9th, 38 points), San Francisco State (T-9th, 38 points), Sonoma State (11th, 33 points) and Cal State Stanislaus (12th, 15 points).

The Tritons went 22-11 overall last season and placed second in the CCAA at 17-5. They won their first-ever conference tournament title, earning an automatic berth in the NCAA postseason. In West Regional first round action in Bellingham, Wash., UCSD was defeated by Grand Canyon, 68-57.

UCSD returns three starters, including All-CCAA First Team performer Erin Dautremont. The senior forward was the Tritons' leading rebounder last year, averaging 6.9 boards per game. Dautremont scored 11.8 points per game and carried a .480 field goal percentage, the fifth-highest among all CCAA players.

Also returning are junior forward McKennan Bertsch and junior guard Miranda Seto. Starting all 33 games, Seto amassed a team-high 89 assists for an average of 2.7 per game, which ranked fifth in the CCAA. In 21 starts, Bertsch averaged 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.

The Tritons need to replace their top two scorers as guards Daisy Feder and Emily Osga were lost to graduation. Feder, the CCAA's Most Valuable Player and an All-West Region First Team selection, put down 18.3 points per game last season, the third-best average in the conference. She led the league in three-point field goals (2.7/game) and free-throw percentage (.850). Osga averaged 12.4 points per game and led the CCAA in three-point field goal percentage (.461). She ranked second in overall field goal percentage (.503).

UC San Diego begins its 2013-14 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 17, with a league contest at Cal State San Bernardino, scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip. The Tritons will host their annual Thanksgiving Classic tournament Nov. 29-30 at RIMAC Arena.

The 2014 CCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament will take on a new six-team format and will be played at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. Games are scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 6, and will conclude with semifinal and final rounds on March 7-8.
