LA JOLLA, Calif. - Lauren Freidenberg
finished with game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds and Chelsea Carlisle
scored 13 to lead the No. 5 UC San Diego women's basketball team to a convincing 70-45 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Monday evening at RIMAC Arena.
UCSD scored the first 10 points of the game and led by as many as 31, cruising to yet another comfortable victory in what has been an absolutely torrid start to the 2011-12 season. The Tritons improved to 9-0 overall on the year, while upping their mark in CCAA play to 3-0.
Cal State San Bernardino falls to 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in the CCAA with the loss. The Tritons and Coyotes will meet again next week to wrap up their home-and-home series in San Bernardino.
Returning to the court after an eight-day layoff, UCSD showed very little rust on Monday, shooting 48% from the floor, with a total of 10 Tritons getting into the scoring column. UCSD shot a blistering 59% in the first half, racing out to a commanding 42-17 halftime lead, and went on to win its third straight game by over 20 points.
The Triton defense was outstanding in its own right, holding the Coyotes to just 45 points -- a season-low for a UCSD opponent this season -- on 29% shooting.
"It was great to get back out on the court tonight after the break," fifth-year head coach Charity Elliott said. "We had some stretches where we played extremely well and really made things happen with our energy and intensity, but there were definitely some things to work on as well. We had way too many turnovers and our execution could have been a bit better, but we'll take it."
Freidenberg hit all five of her shots in the first half and finished 7-for-8 overall to reach double figures for the seventh time in nine games this season. She was also a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line and her 12 boards were a season-high.
Carlisle was a very efficient 5-of-7 from the floor, scoring 10 of her 13 points in the opening period. She also finished with three rebounds and a game-high four assists.
Daisy Feder added nine points and five rebounds for the Tritons, while Erin Dautremont tallied eight points and 10 boards.
Eliza Day finished with 18 points on 8-of-20 shooting to pace the Coyotes, but she had little help as no other player finished with more than seven points for San Bernardino.
UCSD jumped all over CSUSB from the opening tip, taking a quick 10-0 lead as the Coyotes missed their first nine shots of the game. The Tritons extended their advantage to 19-4 on a jumper by Freidenberg with eight minutes remaining in the half and her layup three and a half minutes later made it 29-8 in favor of UCSD.
An 11-2 run put the Tritons up by 30 at 42-12 with 1:57 left before the Coyotes scored the final five points of period.
Cal State San Bernardino scored the first six points of the second half to cut the deficit to 19, but Nicole Anderson-Jew answered with a triple to put UCSD on top 45-23 with 14:35 left to play.
The Tritons' lead swelled to 61-31 following a 16-5 spurt later in the half and their lead would not fall below 25 the rest of the way.
Tip-off for UCSD's rematch with Cal State San Bernardino is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 19 at Coussoulis Arena. The Tritons have now won seven of the last nine regular season meetings with the Coyotes after Monday's victory.
