SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Chelsea Carlisle
and Emily Osga
combined to score 36 points and Lauren Freidenberg
recorded her second consecutive double-double as the fourth-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 78-68, on Monday evening at Coussoulis Arena.
Playing for the first time in eight days, UCSD shook off a sluggish first half to sweep the season series with CSUSB and extend its current winning streak to 10 games. The Tritons outscored the Coyotes 22-7 over the first eight and a half minutes of the second and held on for their second win over San Bernardino in as many games.
UCSD improves to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the win, while the Coyotes drop to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference with the loss.
Carlisle and Osga scored 18 points apiece as all five starters finished in double figures for the Tritons. Carlisle was just 7-of-15 from the field, but dropped 4-of-9 from the three-point line, while Osga was 6-for-16 and connected on 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Carlisle added five boards and a game-high seven assists and Osga tallied five boards, three assists and two blocks.
Freidenberg finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds after tallying 19 and 12 in the Tritons' win over the Coyotes last week, while Erin Dautremont added 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Daisy Feder finished with 10 points and five assists.
UCSD's starting five accounted for 72 of the team's 78 points in the game.
Eliza Day and Angela Streets carried most of the scoring load for Cal State San Bernardino as the backcourt duo combined for 47 points on 17-of-36 shooting. Dy put in 24 points to lead all scorers in the game, while Streets finished with 23.
UCSD shot 43.8% (28-64) from the field, while CSUSB finished at a 43.5% (27-62) clip. The Tritons racked up 24 assists on their 28 field goals, three shy of their season high, and held a 42-34 rebounding advantage.
After rolling to a 70-45 win over CSUSB on December 12 at RIMAC Arena, UCSD was in control for most of the game on Monday as well, but this victory didn't come nearly as easy. The Tritons held a 29-19 lead with eight minutes left in the opening half before a 13-1 Coyote run gave the home team a 32-20 advantage three minutes later.
San Bernardino led 39-36 at the break and extended it cushion to five following a bucket by Jaslyn Cosey on the first possession of the second half.
It was all UCSD after that though, as Osga and Carlisle teamed to hit four threes over the next 4:34 to give the Tritons a 54-45 advantage with 15 minutes left to play. Freidenberg scored to put UCSD on top by 12 at 63-51 with just under 10 minutes left and another triple by Carlisle gave the Tritons' their biggest advantage at 68-55 two and a half minutes later.
The Coyotes would cut the deficit to just six at 70-64 with 4:13 remaining, but Freidenberg answered with a pair of free throws and Osga followed with a jumper to put UCSD back on top by 10 and end the threat with 2:39 left on the clock.
The Tritons will take the next nine days off over the holidays before returning to the court on December 29-30 when San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona pay a visit to RIMAC Arena.
