LOS ANGELES - The No. 11 UC San Diego men's water polo team earned a hard-fought 7-4 victory over Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) rival No. 9 Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles Saturday.

The win marked the second time this season the Tritons have defeated the Lions, the first time the team has done so since 2006.

UCSD extended its record to 9-6 overall and 8-2 in the WWPA. LMU fell to 11-9 overall and 7-2 in league play.

The Tritons were led in cage by sophomore Cameron Ravanbach, who finished with 19 saves. On the offensive front, both Luke Syka and Brian Donohoe chipped in three goals, while David Higginson added one.

"It was a pretty interesting game in that both teams are in the somewhat unusual position of transitioning well into the season," said UCSD head coach Denny Harper. "They're adjusting (to the loss of sophomore Joe Ferretti to season-ending shoulder surgery), we're adjusting (without leading scorer Josh Stiling for the past three games), and this was a positive result and shows we're ahead of schedule in that department."

The Tritons and Lions finished out the first quarter tied at two, going back and forth with goals. UCSD held off LMU in the second quarter as Ravanbach earned four saves over the eight minutes.

UCSD came out strong after halftime, outscoring the Lions 3-1 to create its largest lead of the game at 6-3. Syka's third and final goal came from an LMU exclusion with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter.

"It was a super hard-fought game, but we were nails in the second half and really great in the third period," said Harper. "Our guys were very poised and we had one of our better games of the year, especially defensively. Cameron (Ravanbach), for someone getting his first season of varsity minutes, continues to be pretty incredible."

The action continues for the Tritons on Sunday, Oct. 21 as they play No. 2 UCLA in Los Angeles. Game time is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
