NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -
The UC San Diego men's crew team traveled up to the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday and faced numerous rowing powers from throughout California while racing to respectable results to cap off the 2012 portion of the schedule.
"At this point in the season, not being in the water very long, this is a good start to the season," said head coach Zach Johnson, who also said the Tritons are better at this point than they have been in previous seasons.
Topping the final results list of the men's Open 8+ race for the Tritons was the UCSD "A" boat, which finished 10th overall with a time of 14:05.
Coming in just five places and 29 seconds behind the "A" was the UCSD "B" boat (14:34) to finish 15th overall and third among "B" boats. Cal's "B" boat placed fifth overall (13:18) and Stanford's "B" boat finished sixth (13:49) in the event, while UCSD's "B" boat placed higher than "B" vessels from San Diego (14:51, 17th), UC Santa Barbara (15:07, 20th), UC Irvine (15:11, 21st) and Orange Coast College (15:49, 26th).
Also posting a strong finish in the race was the UCSD "C" boat, which crossed the finish in 14:59 for 18th overall, making it the second-best finishing "C" vessel of the race after Cal's "C" boat (13:17) in fourth.
Cal's "A" boat won the event in 13:11.
The Triton men will have to wait nearly three months before they return to the water to kickoff their spring schedule at the San Diego/UC Irvine/UC Santa Barbara Regatta on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2013. The event, which will be held in Marina del Rey, is set to start at 7 a.m.
