Swimmers Head into Final Day at Arena Invite

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming squads completed the second day of competition Friday night of the 2012 Arena Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

The Triton men moved down from second to third on day two, now with 518 points. They trail Hawai'i by just 33 points. Stanford is in control with 1,414 points.

The UCSD women are still in ninth among the field of 13 with 256 points. Two-time defending national champion California continues to lead with 831.5 points, followed by San Diego State (634.5) and Arizona State (619).

Junior captain Nicholas Korth was the second-day highlight for UCSD, as the former national champion won the 100 breaststroke in 54.21, successfully defending his Arena title in his best event. He had distanced the field in a school-record 53.70 a year ago. Jacob Lammott also made the championship final and was eighth (56.34).

Sophomore Dane Stassi had the second-best individual finish by a Triton on Friday, touching fifth in the championship final of the 100 butterfly in 48.30. Senior captain Bethany Dong was sixth in the 400 individual medley (4:18.01).

Zach Graves (4:02.07), Kyle Nadler (4:02.18), John Chang (4:03.06) and Jeremy Smith (4:03.13) finished 11-12-13-14 in the 400 IM. Olivia Fountain was the top UCSD swimmer in the 100 fly, timing 55.66. Junior teammate Anji Shakya was 16th following the consolation final of the 200 free in 1:50.94.

In relay activity, the Triton ‘A' 800 free foursome of freshmen Paul Li, Michael Leung, Howie Chang and junior Alex Merrill timed 6:38.84 for a third-place showing.

The UCSD ‘A' women's 800 free relay of Sierra Robbins, Dong, Dari Watkins and Shakya (7:28.23) was sixth. The Triton ‘A' men's 200 medley relay of Julius Espiritu, Korth, Adam Yen and Reid McCallum placed eighth in a time of 1:31.02.

The annual meet concludes Saturday with six events: 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay. Men's preliminaries at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool begin at 9 a.m., followed by women's prelims. Finals are slated for a 5 p.m. start.
