FAREWELL FOR A BIT
This week's contests at Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay kick off a six-game road swing for UCSD. It also includes stops at San Francisco State, Sonoma State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. The Tritons won't play at RIMAC Arena again until hosting Humboldt State on Friday, Feb. 8. It will be the team's longest away streak since the 2007-08 season, when UCSD played eight consecutive road games, half of those coming in the CCAA Tournament and NCAA West Regional. During the 2005-06 season, the Tritons played nine straight regular season games away from La Jolla.
In addition to all home contests, UCSD's road games at Cal State Dominguez Hills (Feb. 1) and Cal State L.A. (Feb. 2) will be broadcast live by ESPN Radio 1700. You can also listen to the broadcast online at http://www.sandiego1700.com.
RIPE FROM THE STRIPE
UCSD has been dominant from the free throw line. The Tritons lead the CCAA and rank fifth nationally in free throw percentage at 77.6%. Tyler McGrath leads all league players and is 11th in the country at 90.5%. McGrath finished the 2011-12 season as the CCAA's leader in free throw percentage at 83.3%.
Guards Tyler McGrath and James McCann currently rank among the CCAA's top 10 scorers. McGrath is second (16.4 points/game) and McCann is seventh (13.8 points/game). McGrath has scored 10 or more points in 10 of 11 games while McCann has posted double-digit totals in nine of 11.
THE SIXTH CENTURY
UCSD'S win at Humboldt State on Jan. 5 was the 600th victory in program history. Since 1965-66, the Tritons' inaugural season of play, the team has compiled a 601-629 overall mark.
CHICO STATE REWIND
In front of 1,791 fans at RIMAC Arena, UCSD held on for a 65-62 win over Chico State on Jan. 11. Tyler McGrath rattled off a game-high 24 points while James McCann added 21. McGrath completed the Tritons' first double-double of the season by also collecting a career-high 10 rebounds. The Wildcats, led by Amir Carraway's 17 points, made just 16 of their 27 free throws, 59.3%. The crowd was the second-largest ever for a non-Spirit Night (an annual campus event centered around a basketball doubleheader) game at RIMAC Arena.
CAL STATE STANISLAUS REWIND
Not able to keep up the momentum from defeating Chico State a night prior, the Tritons suffered a 77-67 loss against Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 12 at RIMAC. UCSD held a 10-point lead at halftime, but the Warriors sank 65.2% of their shots in the second half to storm back. Three Tritons posted 10 or more points including Brandon Blanchard, who finished with a career-high 19 on 6-for-10 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line. He also had a team co-high six rebounds. Ray Mitchell led all players with 20 points for CSUS.
A LOOK AT THE OTTERS
Cal State Monterey Bay enters Friday's game with a 7-8 overall record and a 3-5 mark in CCAA play, tied with Cal State Stanislaus for eighth place. Last week in Seaside, the Otters lost to No. 9 Cal Poly Pomona (68-50) and defeated Humboldt State (70-61). Alex Fertig leads the team in scoring at 15.0 points/game, while Brandon Ward is putting in 11.9 points per game. Kris Gallop is CSUMB's top rebounder with his 6.5 boards/game average.
A LOOK AT THE PIONEERS
Cal State East Bay, which will host Cal State San Bernardino Friday, enters the week at 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA. The Pioneers are in a three-way tie for fifth place along with Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Last week, CSUEB split a pair of league games, defeating Humboldt State (78-70) and falling to No. 9 Cal Poly Pomona (58-51). Gabe Kindred is averaging a team-high 11.9 points/game and Jurrell Turner is at 10.3. Nick Marshall averages 7.1 rebounds/game.
Prior to Cal State San Bernardino scoring 90 on Nov. 24, no UCSD opponent had posted a point total that high since Cal State Monterey Bay won 97-93 in double overtime on Jan. 26, 2008 at RIMAC Arena. The last time an opponent put up 90-plus in regulation was on Jan. 4, 2007 when Humboldt State downed the Tritons 90-76 in Arcata.
WE'VE GOT SPIRIT, HOW 'BOUT YOU?
A reminder that Spirit Night will take place on Friday, Feb. 8 when the men and women both host Humboldt State at RIMAC Arena. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with the women tipping off at 5:30 and the men at 7:30. The Spirit Night trophy will be presented following the men's game and fireworks will close out the night on RIMAC Field. Last year's Spirit Night drew a crowd of 3,642.
ALL BUT ONE
UCSD returns all but one of its starters from last season, including full-timers James McCann, Tyler McGrath and Justin Brue, along with part-timers MacKenzie McCullough and Ryan Peters. That group accounted for 61% of the team's scoring and 50% of its rebounds. The lone loss was big man Christian Hatch, who led the Tritons in scoring (12.5/game) and rebounding (7.3/game). The center was named to the All-CCAA Second Team.
COACH AND COACH
UCSD head coach Chris Carlson will be a weekly guest on XX Sports 1090's "Coach" Kentera Show. Carlson will join host John Kentera every Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m. You can listen online as well at http://bit.ly/TsuTZ6.
