LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The UC San Diego golf team sits in second place after two rounds of play Monday at the Thunderbirds Invitational, hosted by Grand Canyon University at the Wigwam Golf Resort, just outside of Phoenix.
UCSD holds a two-round total of 586, 10-over par on the Gold Course. The Tritons are eight strokes behind 22nd-ranked Grand Canyon, which leads with a 2-over 578. No. 12 Central Oklahoma and Dixie State are tied for third at 591, 15-over, in the 16-team field.
Three Tritons are among the top-10 individual standings with Jay Lim in second and Lewis Simon and Ryan Rankin tied for sixth. Lim is one of just three players below par with a 3-under, 141. He fired a 71 in the opening round and followed with a 70 in the second round on the par-72 course. Simon shot a 71-75--146 while Rankin carded a 73-73--146.
Also representing UCSD are Daniel Yang (T-41st, 74-80--154) and Clayton Yamaguchi (T-41st, 75-79--154).
Grand Canyon's Jimmy Kozikowski holds the individual lead with a 6-under 138. He shot a 69 in both rounds.
UCSD found itself in first place after totaling a 1-over 289 in the first round, one stroke ahead of Dixie State and three in front of Grand Canyon. However, the Antelopes returned to the course to shoot a 2-under 286 in the second round, while the Tritons had a 9-over 297.
The third and final round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
