SAN FRANCISCO - Matching its best start in program history, the eighth-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept San Francisco State at The Swamp Friday night in both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener.
Scores were 25-20, 25-12 and 25-19. UCSD improved its unbeaten record to 9-0 overall, while SFSU fell to 5-4.
The Tritons turned in a balanced match all the way around, hitting a season-high .309 with 43 kills and only nine errors in 110 attempts. Conversely, the Gators hit just .070, totaling 30 kills and 22 miscues in 114 attacks. UCSD out-blocked SFSU, 10-2, also a season-best number at the net. UC San Diego also led in service aces (4-1) and digs (51-46).
"We've done a good job of closing tight games," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "Tonight, we did it again in the first set and then kept the pressure on them. It was a nice road win in a tough place to play."
Running the strong attack was setter Heidi Sierks, who posted a double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs. It was the sophomore's third double of the season.
Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) led all players with 13 kills, while Sophie Rowe had 12 kills, six digs and four blocks.
Junior transfer Caitlin Brenton finished with eight kills and four blocks from the right side and Kameron Cooper had seven kills and a match-high five stuffs in the middle. Libero Brittany Lombardi amassed 15 digs, a match-best.
For the Gators, Melissa Horton had nine kills to lead the team offensively. Jaclyn Clark and Jessica Nicerio each had 10 digs.
The Tritons have gone 9-0 to begin a campaign several times, most recently in 2011. UCSD has won 27 of a possible 29 sets so far this year.
UC San Diego, which began a season-long seven-match road swing tonight, takes on No. 18 Sonoma State in Rohnert Park Saturday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves (7-2) were swept by No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino Friday. The match will be covered by live video and live stats.
