WASHINGTON, D.C. - The UC San Diego men's rowing team competed in three races Friday on the opening day of action at the George Washington Invitational Regatta on the Potomac River.
UCSD went up against Holy Cross in Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8 and Novice 8 events.
The highlight of the day was the Novice 8 boat taking a victory. The Tritons posted a winning time of 6:12.30, well ahead of the Crusaders' 6:18.27. UCSD's Novice 8 crew was coxswain Tida Thaipejr, Carson West, Tynan Rodger, Steven Bolton, Blake Branine, Cameron Abel, Leonardo Mercenari, Jack Rausser and Jon Baker.
Holy Cross won the other two races.
In the Varsity 8, the Crusaders crossed the line in 6:01.70, while UC San Diego followed in 6:15.68. The Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Sean Dougherty, Scott Kennedy, John Buda, Daniel Mahan, Cian Dowling, Will Wright, Gibb Anella, Forrest Sundquist and Matt Thalken.
Holy Cross recorded a time of 6:21.70 to win the 2nd Varsity 8 as well. The Tritons came in at 6:33.45 with coxswain Drake Lem, Zack Attaran, Jack Maxson, Jason Heinen, Robert Faris, Kyle Dickson, Scott Moso, Ian Skelton and Kyle Wilson.
The George Washington Invitational Regatta concludes Saturday. UCSD will be racing Georgetown and George Washington. Novice 8 races are scheduled for 7:20 a.m. and 11:50 a.m., 2nd Varsity 8 races are slated for 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and the Varsity 8 boats are set to go at 7:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. (all times Pacific).
Other men's crews competing on the Potomac include Navy and Virginia.
