LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego women’s basketball team suffered a defeat to No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona, 73-67, Friday night at RIMAC Arena despite a career-high 25 points from Miranda Seto. The Tritons stormed back from 13 down to cut the deficit to a pair with under a minute to go, but the Broncos prevailed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup.
UCSD falls to 11-6 overall and 8-5 in the CCAA following the loss, while CPP improves to 14-3 and 11-2 in conference play.
Seto opened the game on fire and scored 11 of UCSD’s 13 early points, which included a trio of threes to put the Tritons ahead 13-9. With the score tied at 25 with 5:32 to play in the half, the Broncos closed the first period on a 14-3 run to lead 39-28 at the intermission.
The Broncos, who currently sit in first place in the CCAA, extended the lead in the second half and grabbed their biggest lead of the night of 13 points, 51-38, with 12:38 remaining. The Tritons responded with a run of their own minutes later, highlighted by a Megan Perry three and a trey from Haley Anderson to cut the CPP lead to a pair, 65-63, with 1:46 to go. After two free-throws from the Broncos and layup from Seto, UCSD once again cut the deficit to a pair, 69-67, after a Mckennan Bertsch layup with 30 seconds remaining. The Broncos, however, nailed their final four free-throws to put the game away and win 73-67.
The Broncos finished the night shooting .512 from the floor after making 22-of-43 shots, while the Tritons were held to a .339 mark on 20-of-59 shooting.
Seto finished the night seven-of-12 from the field and nailed four treys en route to her career-high 25 points. She also added a team-high six rebounds and four assists to her line for the night. Perry was the second-leading scorer for UCSD and finished with nine points and five assists.
The Broncos finished with four players in double-figures in the win, led by 20 points from Ariel Marsh. She made four-of-six shots from the floor and drained 11-of-12 free throws. Ashley Lovett finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Jada Blackwell poured in 14 points and J.J. Jude scored 11 points for CPP.
UCSD managed to outrebound the Broncos 36-31, including 17 on the offensive glass, but were outscored in the paint 24-18 on the night.
The Tritons will look to get back in the win column tomorrow night as they take on Humboldt State at 5:30 p.m. at RIMAC Arena. On Dec. 5 in Arcata, UCSD came away with a 71-63 win behind Erin Dautremont’s double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.
