WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego’s Kiera Bocchino was named Tuesday as the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 7-13.
The award marked the team’s second weekly conference recognition for the 2013 campaign, as junior All-American Cassie Callahan (Coronado/Coronado HS) was selected on Sept. 17. This is Bocchino’s first career league honor.
Bocchino opened the scoring in a pair of much-needed, season-resurrecting home triumphs for UCSD this past weekend to snap a six-match winless streak. She first struck in the 63rd minute of a 2-1 victory over 25th-ranked CCAA South Division leader Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, with Callahan grabbing the 82nd-minute decider after the visiting Coyotes had equalized in the 76th. The result ended CSUSB’s seven-game unbeaten run.
The redshirt freshman winger out of Laguna Hills then was first to pounce on a failed defensive clearance in the 58th minute of Sunday’s 2-0 shutout of Chico State. The score later proved to be her first collegiate game-winner. All three of Bocchino’s goals in 2013 have come from right-footed volleys from inside the opposing penalty area in Triton home victories. She also has one assist for seven total points.
As the only team in the South Division to earn the full three points from a game over the weekend, UCSD cut its 10-point deficit behind CSUSB in half. In fifth place heading into last Friday’s action, the Tritons (5-4-3, 4-3-3 CCAA) moved all the way up into sole possession of second, now just five points back of the Coyotes and in CCAA postseason position if the regular season were to end today.
Earlier Tuesday, the Tritons reappeared in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire West Region poll after a one-week absence, tied for eighth with Seattle Pacific.
UCSD continues a season-long six-game homestand with two more critical divisional matches this weekend, first hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night in primetime. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is slated for 7 p.m., after the 17th-ranked UCSD men take on the Toros at 4:30 p.m.
