Release: Tuesday 12/17/2013
by UCSD

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - UC San Diego women’s soccer standout Cassie Callahan was named Tuesday to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Division Women’s Scholar All-West Region First Team.

The junior San Diego product out of Coronado and Coronado High School was chosen to the 11-player first team as one of five midfielders. The NSCAA’s College Division includes all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA programs.

Callahan, a Triton tri-captain in 2013, led UCSD in goals (six), assists (three), points (15), shots (32) and shots on goal (13) for the second year in a row. The 2012 All-American started all 17 matches in which she played, accounting for the winning tally in four of UCSD’s seven victories.

Majoring in mathematics, Callahan has maintained a 3.88 grade-point average through the 2012-13 academic year, with the 2013 fall quarter having just concluded.

Earlier during this postseason, Callahan earned Capital One Academic All-America Third Team, NSCAA All-West Region Second Team, Daktronics All-West Region Second Team, All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) First Team and Capital One Academic All-District 8 First Team recognition.

To be eligible for NSCAA Scholar All-West Region accolades, student-athletes were required to have a 3.30 GPA and significant athletic credentials, on par with all-region status. Only juniors and seniors in academic standing qualify. As a first-team honoree at the regional level, Callahan may now be selected in the coming days to one of the NSCAA Scholar All-America squads.

Callahan was one of four California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) representatives on the first team, alongside the Cal State Stanislaus duo of Karenee Demery and Karli Nestler, and Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Chelsey Jones. Eleven players, including three from the CCAA, made the second team, with 13 more student-athletes garnering honorable mention.
