No. 25 UCSD Handles Toros for Third Straight Win

CARSON, Calif. - Sophomore forward Izzy Pozurama recorded a two-goal brace to give her four scores in three matches in leading the 25th-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team to a third straight win, 3-1, over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Toro Stadium on Sunday.

UC San Diego improved to 10-1-2 overall and 8-1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With the loss on Senior Day, Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 3-9-2 overall and 2-9-1 in conference play. The teams had played to a 1-1 deadlock in La Jolla on Sept. 28.

With the three victories in a row following a three-game winless stretch, the Tritons maintain a commanding cushion of at least seven points, pending other results Sunday, atop the CCAA South Division standings with four contests to go, as they close in on a return trip to Carson in three weeks' time for the CCAA Championship.

Pozurama's opener served as a third successive goal for the Lake Forest product. She tallied UCSD's fourth in a 4-1 win at Humboldt State last Sunday, prior to recording the lone score of a 1-0 home triumph over Cal State L.A. on Friday night.

Sunday's goal came at the 6:07 mark as Pozurama struck from close range, with assists going to midfield teammates Cassie Callahan and Alexa Enlow. Callahan's was her fourth, while Enlow's was her team-leading fifth.

Callahan, a sophomore from Coronado, would later snap Pozurama's streak and add to UCSD's lead, putting a flicked header onto a Casey Parisi cross for her team-best seventh strike of the season at 37:04. Parisi's assist, coming just 131 seconds after entering the match as a substitute, was the first of her Triton career.

The two goals would prove to be UCSD's only shots over the first 45 minutes. The Toros countered with a pair of Ani Eishoei efforts that missed the target, leading up to an attempt by Olivia Patterson with 42 seconds left in the frame that Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky saved.

Following the intermission, Pozurama upped her 2012 scoring ledger to four in the 57th minute, making no mistake on a one-on-one opportunity. Jessica Wi set the play up for the third assist of her senior campaign.

Shortly after what was effectively the game clincher, Toro junior Claudia Toledo saw her shot smack off the crossbar.

Cal State Dominguez Hills finally pulled one back in the 87th minute as sophomore forward Natalie Barbosa produced her first goal of the year.

"We started really well," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus. "We went 2-0 up through two good goals. In the second half, it became a really scrappy game. We had our forwards push up and played very, very fluidly, and the third goal killed it off. I was really disappointed in letting up the goal, but it was a good result in the end."

Brodsky came up with two saves over 76:16, with fellow freshman Itzel Gonzalez taking over for the remainder. Senior Tiffany Hollis made a pair of stops for CSUDH through the first 65-plus minutes before giving way to freshman Jennifer Ackerly.

The Toros outshot the Tritons on the afternoon, 9-7. Hayley Johnson had a game-high three for the visitors.

UCSD returns home to Triton Soccer Field for one final time for the 2012 regular season next weekend, hosting sixth-ranked Cal State Stanislaus at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, and Chico State at 11:30 a.m. on Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 21.
