WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California Collegiate Athletic Association
officials announced UC San Diego's Annette Ilg as the women's soccer Player of
the Week for Aug. 30 to Sept. 5. The 5-foot-10 forward recorded three goals in
the Tritons' first two games of the 2010 season.
UCSD defeated two Pacific West Conference opponents in dominating fashion, topping
Dominican 6-0 on Thursday before notching a 2-0 victory Saturday over Notre
Dame de Namur.
Ilg, transitioning to the soccer squad after serving as a key member of the
UCSD basketball team the past four years, tallied two goals Thursday while
using her size for positioning in the box and out-jumping DU defenders to win
headers. It marked her first competitive soccer match since high school in Avon
Lake, Ohio.
On Saturday she added her third goal of the season, which would turn out to be
the game-winning score in the 2-0 win over NDNU. With two games played, Ilg
leads the Tritons in points and goals scored.
Ilg's week of Aug. 30 to Sept. 5 marks the first Wilson/CCAA Player of the Week
honor awarded this season.
UCSD, now ranked No. 6 nationally at the Division II level, will begin
conference play Friday with a 4:30 p.m. home match against No. 23 Cal State
L.A. On Sunday at 12 p.m., the Tritons will host No. 9 Cal State Dominguez
Hills.
