LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 6 UC San Diego women's soccer
team suffered a 3-1 loss Friday against No. 23 Cal State L.A. The visiting
Golden Eagles rallied for three unanswered scores to open the second half and
the Tritons could never recover, despite a late goal from Alyssa Newcomer.
The match marked the start of the California Collegiate Athletic Association
schedule for both squads and the South Division rivals played even through the
first half. Less than five minutes into the second period though, Ann Marie
Tangorra tallied her third score of the season and CSULA (2-0-0, 1-0-0 CCAA) recorded
two more goals before the Tritons (2-1-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) responded with their
Late in the first half, the Golden Eagles produced their first real chance when
Gabbi Segall found an open Liz Franco on the right side inside the box. Franco
slid a shot past UCSD goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong but the ball caromed off the

Despite being outshot 8-3 in the opening period, the Tritons' offense also had
a decent chance late. At the 35:14 mark, Annette Ilg ripped a hard shot with
her left foot from outside the box but CSULA netminder Jessie Walworth managed
to make the save.
Tangorra put the Golden Eagles on the board at the 49:43 mark. A scrum of
players from both sides met the ball at the top of the UCSD defensive box and
it ended up shooting out of the group to Tangorra. She controlled it and shot
high and hard toward the net. Armstrong stuck her hands up but the ball took a
high bounce into the empty net behind her.
At the 72:24 mark, CSULA took a 2-0 lead when a quick combination of passes
from Segall to Marissa Pickett eventually led to a chance for Alex Conley. The
senior forward placed a low shot to the left of a diving Armstrong.
Less than four minute later, Segall got in the scoring action with another low
shot from the left side of the box as Pickett earned her second assist of the
The Tritons cut the lead to 3-1 at the 80:56 mark, when Newcomer sent a header
over Walworth's head after Hayley Johnson sent a corner kick into the box from
the right side. The score marked Newcomer's second goal of the season and
fourth of her career.
The Golden Eagles ended the match with a slight advantage in shots, 15-14, while
UCSD took five corner kicks to CSULA's four.
The Tritons will return to action on Sunday when they host No. 9 Cal State
Dominguez Hills. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. The Toros defeated Cal State East
