WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego forward Sarah McTigue received
the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Player of
the Week honor for the week of Sept. 27 to Oct. 3, conference officials
announced Tuesday.
McTigue, UCSD's leading scorer in 2009, put together two impressive
performances this past weekend in helping the Tritons defeat Cal State San
Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona at home. The junior from Bellflower, Calif., is
currently second on the team in goals with four in 2010.
In the 28th minute of Friday's match with CSUSB, the Tritons earned a corner
kick on the right side of the field. After a scrum in the box, Jessica Wi fired
a hard shot that was blocked away. McTigue was waiting for the rebound
opportunity and took advantage, shooting past the Coyotes' goalkeeper to bump UCSD's
lead to 2-0. The score stayed that way to the final whistle, as the Tritons
walked away with a 2-0 victory.
On Sunday, McTigue helped UCSD take a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the
match. After a short cross from Annette Ilg
bounced off the CPP netminder's hands, McTigue flicked in the rebound chance
for her 15th career goal. The Tritons ended up defeating the Broncos in
overtime, 3-2.
UCSD will travel to play CCAA South Division rivals this weekend, with a Friday
match against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sunday contest at 15th-ranked Cal
State L.A.
