With the win, the Tritons improve to 9-2-2 overall, 7-2-2 in the CCAA. The Wildcats drop to 6-7-0 overall and 5-6-0 in the CCAA.
On the first venture into Chico State's penalty box in the sixth minute, UCSD's Sarah McTigue found Ilg's feet near the corner of the area. Ilg dribbled to the penalty spot, fending off a pair of Wildcat defenders. Chico State goalkeeper Sydney Oliver rushed at Ilg to take it off her foot, but Ilg forced her way past, slotting home the Tritons' first shot into the back of the net.
Seven minutes later, Ilg found herself with space along the right sideline. Picking her head up, she floated a cross toward McTigue at the top of the box. McTigue played a perfect dummy, allowing the ball to trickle to a wide-open Danielle Dixon. The ensuing shot from Dixon deflected off the cleat of a Wildcat defender and dropped just under the crossbar, giving the Tritons a 2-0 lead just 15 minutes into the match.
Chico State nearly got on the board five minutes later, as Blake Lopes' corner kick deflected off the front post and across a wide-open frame. Luckily for UCSD, no Chico State attacker was at the far-post to put it away.
The Wildcats would get one back with less than 10 minutes to go in the half. After collecting the ball of a throw-in by Carly Atkins, Ashley Perlman curled in a cross from the left sideline towards Lisa Webster, who was crashing into the box. Webster got inside position on her defender, deflecting the shot with the inside of her right foot and into the right corner of the frame.
With less than five minutes remaining in the half, UCSD goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong stonewalled a Wildcat attempt from point-blank range that would have tied the match going into the break.
In the 62nd minute, Ilg beat her defender to the goal line, sending in a cross near the top of the six-yard box. Shelby Wong met the cross with a one-time volley, putting just enough mustard on her shot to beat the goalkeeper to the near post for her second goal of the season.
Ilg now has six goals for the season to go along with three assists.
Armstrong was called to task again with less than 10 minutes remaining, as she stretched out to save an open header by Chico State's Abby Glasgow from point-blank range. Glasgow's attempt would prove to be the last offensive threat for either squad.
UCSD is now unbeaten in its last eight contests.
The Tritons will be back in action this Sunday, October 17, to take on Cal State Stanislaus at 11:30 a.m. at Triton Soccer Field.
