Freshman Takes Home CCAA Player of the Week Honors
Release: Monday 09/19/2011
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego forward Cassie Callahan has been named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 12-18, it was announced on Monday.

The freshman from Coronado helped the Tritons go undefeated on the weekend, scoring a goal in each of UCSD's wins at San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona. She is the first Triton to earn CCAA Player of the Week this season.

Callahan has scored a goal in each of the team's last three matches and currently leads the squad with three goals, six points and 17 shots on the young season.

In September 11's 1-1 tie at Cal State San Bernardino, Callahan stole a ball at the top of the box and fired a shot over the keeper's shoulder to tie the match. She followed that performance with a goal in the 79th minute at SFSU on Friday, September 16, forcing overtime in a match that the Tritons would win via golden goal. On Sunday, she headed-home a corner kick from Hayley Johnson in UCSD's 4-0 win over CPP.

UCSD faces another big CCAA weekend ahead, starting with a road match at No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, September 23, at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.

The Tritons' first seven matches of 2011 were on the road, but UCSD will host its first home match of the season next Sunday, September 25 at noon against Cal State San Bernardino. The match will be the first leg of a doubleheader and will be followed by the men's soccer game vs. CSUSB at 2:30 p.m.

UCSD will also be celebrating the Triton Soccer Kickoff, a 10-event competition between participating youth soccer clubs in the San Diego area. With a specific point system per event, the club that compiles the most overall points will win the perpetual trophy that it can keep in its trophy case for the next year. Competitions include: a four-person dribbling relay, two-person juggling, target shooting, individual headers, individual juggling and many more.
