The UC San Diego women's soccer team had six players named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-West Region team, it was announced Tuesday. In addition, senior goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong
earned the region's Player of the Year award.
Junior defender Hayley Johnson, senior midfielder Anne Wethe and Armstrong were first team selections. Junior defender Ellen Wilson, senior midfielder Shelby Wong and senior forward Sarah McTigue were placed on the second team.
A two-time Daktronics all-region honoree, Armstrong was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year on November 2. She led a Triton defense that ranked first in NCAA DII in goals against average (.211), total shutouts (14) and four goals-against during the regular season. She had the lowest individual goals-against average in DII at .211 and her .935 save percentage ranked second nationally. Between October 16 and October 20, Armstrong shutout five consecutive opponents while tallying 18 saves. She finished the regular season ranked first in the CCAA in shutouts, save percentage and goals against.
Wethe, who started 89 of 90 matches UCSD played over the last four years, will graduate in the spring as a two-time Daktronics All-West Region First Team honoree. She scored a goal and tallied an assist this season. Her lone goal was a game-winner in UCSD's 2-0 win over No. 10 Seattle Pacific on Sept. 3. Wethe also earned Capital One Academic All-District for District 8 and first team All-CCAA honors.
Johnson had a prolific season at left back for the Tritons. An All-CCAA First Teamer, her 13 assists are third-most in a single season in school history and she tied for second-most in the nation in DII. Johnson played one-third of a Triton back line that boasted the lowest goals against average in NCAA DII (.211) and had the lowest amount of goals allowed in the regular season with 4. Now 10th in UCSD history with 27 career assists, Johnson registered eight assists in five games between September 18 and October 2, including three multiple-assist games.
Wilson started every game for the Tritons while logging the most minutes (1760) of any player for UCSD during the regular season. She led a Triton back line that ranked first in NCAA DII in goals against average (.211) and total shutouts (14). 2011 is the second time in her career that Wilson has been named to the Daktronics All-West Region Second Team.
Wong, an All-CCAA First Teamer, finished second on the team with five goals on the season, two of them for game-winners. She scored the game-winner three minutes into overtime on September 16 at San Francisco State and also had a hat trick in UCSD's 5-0 rout of Humboldt State on October 21 at Triton Soccer Stadium.
McTigue led the Tritons with eight goals and 19 points in 2011, placing half of her 44 shots on-frame. A First Team All-CCAA selection in 2011, she notched four game-winners for the Tritons. She scored the only goal in UCSD's 1-0 win over No. 11 Cal State L.A. on September 9 and then accounted for UCSD's lone goal in a 2-1 loss at the CCAA Championships to Cal State Stanislaus. She finished the regular season tied for seventh in the CCAA with 39 shots, tied for fourth with 17 points and tied for third in goals.
UCSD finished the season 13-3-4 overall after falling to Chico State in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
