Johnson, Armstrong Named Daktronics Division II All-Americans

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Junior defender Hayley Johnson and senior goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong of the UC San Diego women's soccer team were named to the Daktronics Division II Women's Soccer Soccer All-America Team, it was announced Wednesday.

Johnson was selected to the second team, while Armstrong was a third team honoree. Sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences selected the three Daktronics All-America teams, beginning at the regional level with all first team all-region picks advancing to the national ballot. Johnson and Armstrong were named to the All-West Region First Team on November 15.

Johnson had a prolific season at left back for the Tritons. An All-CCAA First Teamer, her 13 assists are  tied for third-most in a single season in school history and she tied for seventh-most in the nation in DII. Johnson played one-third of a Triton back line that boasted the lowest goals against average in NCAA DII (.211) and had the lowest amount of goals allowed in the regular season with 4. Now 10th in UCSD history with 27 career assists, Johnson registered eight assists in five games between September 18 and October 2, including three multiple-assist games.

Armstrong, who was dubbed the CCAA Defensive Player of the Year and the Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, led a Triton defense that ranked first in NCAA DII in goals against average (.211), total shutouts (14) and four goals-against during the regular season. She had the lowest individual goals-against average in DII at .211 and her .935 save percentage ranked second nationally. Between October 16 and October 20, Armstrong shutout five consecutive opponents while tallying 18 saves. She finished the regular season ranked first in the CCAA in shutouts, save percentage and goals against.

UCSD went 13-3-4 overall in 2011 and won the CCAA South with a 12-1-3 conference mark. The Tritons earned the No. 1 seed in the West Region for the NCAA Tournament, but were ousted by Chico State 1-0 n the Second Round on November 13.
