LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 25th-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over San Francisco State at Triton Soccer Field Friday night to begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
"We're still finding our feet with the new players coming in," said head coach Brian McManus. "I thought we handled it well and in the end I thought we were possessing the ball well."
For the second time in as many games this season, the Tritons had an individual net two goals. This time they came from senior forward Gabi Hernandez, bringing her season total to three.
UCSD's first score of the match came from a header by Hernandez after classmate Hayley Johnson served it in from a corner kick.
"Gabi has the skills to be a good player as long as she does what she needs to do in the penatly box," said McManus.
The Tritons' insurance goal came midway through the second half with Hernandez playing patient on the inside to receive a pass from Cassie Callahan, who tallied two goals of her own against Central Washington last week.
UCSD tacked on a third goal when Rachel Leslie scored in the 80th minute from the top left side of the box with assists coming from Johnson and Alexa Enlow.
Triton keeper Kelcie Brodsky made two saves in net while counterpart Annicia Jones had four.
UCSD outshot SFSU 16-6.
The Tritons improved to 2-0 on the season while the Gators fell to 0-1.
UC San Diego returns to Triton Soccer Field Sunday, Sept. 9 to host the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona at 2:30 p.m.
