No. 23 UCSD Defeats CSUSM in Exhibition, 7-3
Release: Saturday 01/26/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team used a six-run fifth inning to overturn a 2-1 deficit and defeat visiting Cal State San Marcos, 7-3, in an exhibition game at Triton Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.

The contest had originally been scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on Friday night, but was postponed due to inclement weather.

It was also the second of three exhibitions for the Tritons ahead of Opening Night on Friday, Feb. 1. UCSD, the four-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season and tournament champion, is ranked No. 23 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Division II preseason poll. Local foe Cal State San Marcos is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Cal State San Marcos scored single runs in the second and fourth frames, both from RBI groundouts. In between, redshirt freshman Corbin Wirta took a 3-2 pitch up the middle with two outs to drive in Brett Levy with the first Triton run of the game in the third.

Junior shortstop Dillon Moyer took the first pitch of the big UCSD fifth and drove it to the base of the wall in left field. Levy followed with a cue shot to center field to drive in Moyer and tie the game at 2-2. After a walk and a balk to move two runners into scoring position, All-American centerfielder Danny Susdorf fisted an RBI single into center field for the first Triton lead of the afternoon at 3-2.

Susdorf's steal set fellow senior James Mossholder up for a pinch-hit, two-run single to center on a two-strike count. Mossholder, who would ultimately take over in right field, later stole second ahead of a walk to Justin Rahn, with junior DH Nick La Face scoring him with a base hit through the left side. An RBI groundout by junior Garrett Tuck rounded out the UCSD scoring for the frame, and as it turned out, the game.

Cal State San Marcos got a solo shot to left field by third baseman Kenny Belzer to determined the final score of a game that started with severe fog that initially prevented those behind the back-stop from seeing the outfielders and scoreboard.

Susdorf finished 2-for-5 with a double, run scored, RBI and stolen base. On the mound, sophomore left-hander Trevor Scott was the pitcher of record. He allowed one earned run on five hits without a walk with three strikeouts over four innings. Scott had taken over for senior right-handed staff ace Ryan Goodbrand, who gave up the first two runs on four hits and one walk during his four-inning outing. He struck out one. Dan Kolodin pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of punch-outs.

Moyer, a transfer from UC Irvine with a sure-handed glove, showed off his arm strength to deny CSUSM second baseman Mike Guadagnini an infield single from deep short to end the top half of the seventh.

Belzer led the Cougars in going 3-for-4 with his home run and two runs scored. Right-handed starter James Dykstra struck out five over his three frames.

UCSD rounds out its exhibition series this Tuesday night, Jan. 29, hosting Vanguard University. First pitch at Triton Ballpark is set for 6 p.m. Admission is free.
