BALANCING ACT
In the four games at the Triton Invitational, UCSD used a balanced scoring attack mixed in with strong defensive play to come out of the weekend 2-2. Six Tritons managed four or more goals, with Jeffrey Jarvis leading the way with eight overall. Tician Toplak and Tommy Friedrich each found the net six times apiece, respectively. UCSD also recorded a different leading scorer in each of the four matches. On the other side of the ball, Cameron Ravanbach averaged eight saves per game after totaling 32.

CRACKING THE TOP TEN
UCSD came in at No. 10 in the second Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) poll, released on Wednesday. The Tritons started the year at No. 11 in the preseason rankings after finishing 2012 in the same position. The Tritons last broke into the top ten in the Nov. 7 release in 2012, coming in at No. 10.

HEAD COACH DENNY HARPER
UCSD head coach Denny Harper is in his 34th season leading the Tritons. He has compiled a career record of 571-416-4, with a winning percentage of .573. Harper has led the Tritons to 15 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) titles and 11 appearances in the NCAA national championships. He has been named WWPA Coach of the Year 16 times and the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) Division II Coach of the Year five times. During the 2006 season, the Tritons set a program record in wins, completing a 26-6 season with their 14th WWPA title and a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championship tournament. Harper, a 1978 graduate of San Diego State University, began coaching at Rancho Alamitos High School, Indio High School and SDSU before coming to UCSD.

TRITON NOTES
Ravanbach is closing in on 300 career saves, sitting 10 away at 290 … The junior from La Jolla HS is also 81 saves away from entering the top-ten all-time career saves list, approaching assistant coach Glenn Busch’s (1997-00) mark of 371 … Friedrich amassed a new career-high in goals scored for a game with four in the match against No. 3 Cal … Luca De Vivo (5), Connor Watson (1), Daniel Straub (1) and Andy Moore (1) all tallied their first career goals as Tritons over the weekend.

ABOUT THE STAGS
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps enters 0-2 overall in 2013, falling to Pepperdine 14-8 and No. 2 UCLA 19-2. The Stags are coming off a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship in 2012, finishing 9-3 in conference and 14-18 overall. The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) named head coach Greg Lonzo, in his seventh year, the Coach of the Year in 2012. Sophomore driver Tanner Cullen (second team ACWPC All-America) and senior driver John Holland (honorable mention ACWPC All-America) power the Stags offensively.

SERIES HISTORY
The Tritons are 42-7-1 all-time against the Stags. UCSD and CMS last clashed in the pool a year ago at Canyonview, with a 16-5 result in favor of the Tritons. Returners Joe Dietrich and Friedrich both tallied two goals while Ravanbach recorded 15 saves in the win.

ABOUT THE SAGEHENS
Pomona-Pitzer opened their season with a 17-4 loss at No. 2 UCLA before losing to UC Santa Barbara 17-7 at the UCLA Invitational. PP has won back-to-back SCIAC titles, sharing 2012 with CMS, after going 11-2 in conference and 16-16 overall a year ago. The Sagehens return four of their five top scorers, highlighted by senior attacker Ryan Higgins.

SERIES HISTORY
UCSD holds a perfect record (33-0) against Pomona-Pitzer in the all-time series. Spearheaded by an impressive defensive effort by the Tritons and Ravanbach, who totaled seven saves, UCSD defeated PP in 2012 by the score of 12-3. Toplak found the back of the cage twice in the victory.

ABOUT THE TROJANS
USC began the season in UCSD’s backyard, playing four games at the Triton Invitational. The Trojans averaged 22.5 goals per game, totaling 90 in a four-game span to leave San Diego with a 4-0 record. The five-time defending NCAA champion holds a 33-game winning streak dating back to 2011. The Trojans return senior driver Nikola Vavic (14) and junior driver Kostas Genidounias (9), who have combined for 23 goals this season.

SERIES HISTORY
The Tritons are 2-32 all-time against the Trojans. The two teams last squared off in a battle in 2006. The Trojans, who were ranked No. 1 at the time, defeated the No. 3 Tritons 10-9 in Los Angeles. You have to travel back to 2001 to find the last victory for UCSD, a 7-3 contest.
