LA JOLLA, Calif. – The 21st-ranked UC San Diego softball team split the season opening California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader with Chico State Friday, winning game one, 2-0, behind a complete game from Alexis Edwards before falling in the nightcap, 2-1, at Triton Softball Field.
The Tritons now hold a 6-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in league play, while the Wildcats stand at 3-4 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play.
UCSD was held to nine hits in the two games combined, led by two from Callie Grant. She also recorded a run, an RBI and a stolen base in the split for the Tritons. The UCSD pitching staff was effective, throwing 14 innings with 10 hits allowed and two earned runs given up.
The Tritons jumped out to a quick lead in game one by scoring a pair in the bottom of the first to lead 2-0.
After Grant walked to lead off the game and advanced to second on a throwing error, Kirsten Willmon delivered a productive groundout to the second baseman to move Grant to third. Caitlin Brown followed with an RBI fielder’s choice as Grant beat the throw home to put the Tritons on the scoreboard. Brown would come around to score following a Wildcat error, which proved to be more than enough run support for Edwards.
The sophomore finished with a full seven frames and only allowed four hits, two walks and recorded one strikeout. The lefty cruised through the first six innings before finishing off the complete-game win with a bases-loaded groundout to improve her record to 3-0 on the year.
In the nightcap, UCSD and CSUC were held scoreless through the first two frames.
In the bottom of the third, Proctor singled and stole second to begin a Triton rally. She was sacrificed to third after an Emily McQuaid bunt, and was promptly brought home on a Grant RBI single up the middle to put UCSD ahead 1-0 after three innings.
The Wildcats responded, however, and scored a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at one. Looking to respond, the Tritons received a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth from Brown, but was stranded at third as UCSD went down in order.
Chico State tacked on another run in the top of the fifth and made it stand the final two frames to win, 2-1.
UCSD was held to six hits in the loss, as no Triton finished with more than one hit. Grant recorded the lone RBI for UCSD.
Chico State was led by one hit and an RBI from Desiree’ Gonzalez in the win. Cheyenne Sandoval improved her record to 1-0 after throwing 4.1 innings with one earned run allowed, while Alex Molina recorded her first save with 2.2 innings in relief.
The Tritons and Wildcats conclude the four-game conference series tomorrow at Triton Softball Field. First pitch from the circle is slated for 10 a.m.
