LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team opened the Bison Invitational with a 13-7 win over No. 20 Michigan and fell in game two, 9-8, to No. 8 Princeton Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
UCSD jumped out to a quick 3-0 in the opener against Michigan and never looked back. Lizotte recorded a hat-trick of goals in the first three minutes of the game, before Julia Kirkland and Melissa Bartow found the back of the net to give the Tritons a 5-2 lead after the first period.
The Tritons tacked on three more goals, one each from Lizotte, Kirkland and Bartow, in the second quarter to lead 8-3 at halftime.
UCSD would close out the win over the Wolverines with five second-half goals to win, 13-7.
Lizotte finished with four goals and Kirkland poured in three scores to power the Tritons to the victory. Miller blocked nine Michigan shots in goal.
In the nightcap, UCSD and Princeton lived up to their national rankings in an absolute battle of a water polo game.
With the score tied at three at the intermission, the Tritons grabbed a lead in the third after scoring four times. As the game headed into the final quarter, the Tritons held a 7-6 lead.
Princeton came out in the fourth period and avoided the upset by the Tritons by scoring three times, while UCSD only managed one score to give Princeton the 9-8 win.
Lizotte led the Tritons in the game with a hat trick of goals, while Jolene Guiliana found the back of the cage twice. Lauren Boyer, Alexis Wieseler and Bartow also scored a goal apiece for UCSD in the loss. Miller made four saves in the cage.
UCSD faces George Washington at 5:00 a.m. (PST) and No. 20 Wagner at 10:00 a.m. (PST) to finish out the Bison Invitational tomorrow.
