Release: Friday 02/21/2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team drained 17 three-pointers en route to pounding league opponent San Francisco State by a score of 76-51 Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

With the huge victory, UCSD improved to 14-9 overall and 10-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). SFSU fell to 12-10 and 10-9.

With three regular season games remaining, the Tritons are tied with the Gators for sixth place in the CCAA. The top six teams in the league qualify for the conference tournament, which will be held March 6-8 in Ontario, Calif.

UCSD nailed 52 percent (17-33) of its long-range shots, making seven in the opening half and 10 more in the second. The team's previous high for three-pointers this season was 12, which the Tritons hit on two occasions. The last time UCSD made more threes was on March 2, 2007, when it went 18-for-22 at home against Cal State Monterey Bay.

Trailing 34-33 at halftime, the Tritons made 58 percent (15-26) of their shots in the second half and out-scored the Gators 43-17 in the frame. Their 10 three-pointers came on 15 attempts, 67 percent. SFSU managed to net just three of their 24 field goal attempts in the half, 13 percent.

UC San Diego freshman Adam Klie finished with a career- and game-high 24 points. He was 9-for-15 from the field with four three-pointers, five rebounds and a pair of steals. Aleks Lipovic totaled 21 points off of seven threes, while James McCann had 10 points, nine assists and three steals. Drew Dyer amassed 11 points with three three-pointers and Hunter Walker pulled down a game co-high seven rebounds.

It was the second time this season that Lipovic canned seven treys. He also did it against Cal State Dominguez Hills in La Jolla on Jan. 24.

San Francisco State was led by Will Overton, Jr., who netted 15 points. Bennie Rhodes had 12 points and seven boards, while Calvin Otiono finished with 10 points. UCSD held Nefi Perdomo, ranked third in the CCAA with a 17.9 points per game average, to just three points.

A three-pointer by Lipovic with 17:33 left in the game put UCSD up 40-37 and the Tritons would not trail again. Treavon Francis' layup at the 2:22 mark accounted for the final points in the game, giving UCSD a 25-point advantage, its largest lead of the night.

The Tritons turned the ball over just eight times to the Gators' 18.

UCSD plays its final home game of the season Saturday, hosting Sonoma State (5-18, 4-15) at 7:30 p.m. The Seawolves were ripped, 82-48, by 15th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Friday.

The three senior Tritons - Matt Bailey, McCann and MacKenzie McCullough - will be recognized prior to Saturday's tip.
