SAN FRANCISCO – Caitlin Brown and Nicole Spangler of the UC San Diego softball team were named to the Daktronics All-West Region Second Team Monday morning. The selections were made by the region’s sports information directors.
Brown finished the season leading UCSD with nine home runs, 42 RBI and a .544 slugging percentage and was second with eight doubles. The junior catcher ranks among the top 10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in both home runs and RBI. Brown holds a career total of 20 homers, good for the No. 3 spot on the program’s record book. Most recently, she was 3-for-6 with a run, two doubles and two RBI at the NCAA West Regional.
Brown, who earned All-CCAA First Team honors this season, was also named to the Daktronics All-West Region Second Team in 2012.
Spangler, a 2013 NFCA All-West Region First Team honoree, posted a strong senior campaign, finishing with a .347 batting average, 13 doubles, 18 walks and a .413 on-base percentage, all team-highs. She is second on the roster with 27 RBI and a .447 slugging percentage and third with 52 hits. Spangler went 7-for-11 (.635) with four runs and seven RBI in the season-opening series against Western Oregon, earning CCAA Player of the Week accolades.
Cal State Dominguez Hills’ Stephanie Jimenez and Humboldt State’s Chrissy Stalf were named the Daktronics West Region Pitcher and Player of the Year, respectively.
The 14 members of the All-West Region First Team will now be placed on the Daktronics All-America ballot.
