LA JOLLA, Calif. – Mya Romero and Caitlin Brown delivered four RBI in games one and two, respectively, to power No. 19 UC San Diego to a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) day sweep over Cal State Stanislaus Friday at Triton Softball Field. The opener finished after five innings with a score of 10-1, while the second contest concluded after six innings with the final 8-0.
UCSD improves to 20-6 overall and 15-3 in CCAA play following the pair of wins. CSUS falls to 10-25 overall and 6-18 in league play.
The Tritons totaled 20 hits as a team overall on the day, led by four from Callie Grant and three from Amani Proctor, Emily McQuaid and Brown. The pitching staff was just as impressive, finishing the day with six hits allowed in 11 innings and no earned runs.
In the opener, Alexis Edwards continued her strong 2014 by picking up her 10th win of the season in a complete game effort and the offense exploded for 10 runs as the Tritons won, 10-0, after five innings.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Warriors in the bottom of the third, UCSD scored five times on three hits to grab control of the game. The inning was highlighted by a two-out three-RBI double to center field from Romero on a 2-2 pitch.
UCSD followed with another five spot the following inning on two hits. After two quick outs to start the inning, Proctor connected on her second triple of the season to right center to ignite a flame in the offense. After two consecutive Warrior errors, the scored three runs on two hit-by-pitches and a walk. McQuaid plated the final run with a RBI single up the middle.
Edwards finished off the 10-1 win with a quick fifth to earn the victory. She finished with two hits allowed in five innings and one strikeout. The sophomore lowered her team- and conference-leading ERA to 1.68.
The offense was led by four RBI from Romero and two hits from Grant in the win.
The Tritons continued to swing a hot bat in the nightcap as the offense pounded out 14 hits to earn another victory, 8-0.
UCSD jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning following an RBI single from Brown to score Proctor, who walked and stole second and third to put herself in scoring position. Proctor is now 10-10 on the year in stolen base attempts.
The difference in the game proved to be the second inning, as the Tritons scored five times on six hits to go up 6-0 after two frames. Romero led off with a double and was followed with three consecutive bunt singles from McQuaid, Grant and Proctor. With the bases juiced, Brown produced the big blow on a base clearing three-RBI double down the left-field line. Katie Saunders singled in Brown to make the score 6-0.
The Tritons scored once in the fourth after an RBI triple to right center from Kirsten Willmon, which marked her team-leading third of the year. The game was finished off in the sixth after Alissa Gutierrez singled to left field to bring home McKenna Clewett, who singled to start the inning, and make the final 8-0.
The offense was led by Brown’s three hits, four RBI and one run scored. It marked the 14th time the offense has totaled 10 or more hits in a game.
The CCAA four-game series concludes tomorrow at Triton Softball Field with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
