LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 22 UC San Diego softball team won both ends of a league doubleheader against Humboldt State Tuesday, taking the opener, 11-0, and the nightcap, 5-2, at Triton Softball Field.
With the pair of wins, UCSD improved to 22-8 overall and 16-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). HSU fell to 8-19 on the season and 2-16 in the league.
In the opener of the four-game series, the Tritons scored twice in the first and second innings and hung up a seven spot in the fourth inning, leading to the team's fifth run-rule victory of the season.
Starting pitcher Camille Gaito (13-4) was perfect through four innings for UCSD. She gave up a lone hit in the top of the fifth and final inning. With two outs, Lumberjack catcher Courtney Hiatt singled back up the middle to ruin Gaito's perfection. The reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, Gaito struck out two batters.
At the plate, the Tritons totaled seven hits with center fielder Kris Lesovsky, first baseman Nicole Spangler and designated player Charly Swanberg collecting two apiece. Lesovsky scored a run and drove in two, while Spangler recorded a run and a RBI and Swanberg knocked in a pair. Third baseman Emily McQuaid and second baseman Maria Sykes each crossed the plate twice.
The Jacks made four costly errors in the field as only two of UCSD's 11 runs were earned. The damage could have gone further, but the Tritons stranded nine runners on base.
Humboldt starter Jennifer Sizemore (2-4) took the loss, giving up all 11 runs and seven hits while walking eight and striking out two over 3.1 innings.
In game two, another infield error stung Humboldt State. UCSD took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before HSU immediately tied it up with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Triton left fielder Kirsten Willmon reached on an error to lead off the third and was sacrificed over to second base by shortstop Mya Romero. Swanberg singled to center to score Willmon, the eventual game-winning run, for her fourth RBI of the day.
The Tritons went on to add two insurance runs in the fourth inning.
Romero doubled, scored a run and had two RBI and Willmon stole two bases, giving her a team-leading total of 12 swipes on the year.
Starting pitcher Jennifer Manuel (3-1) earned the win, tossing four innings and surrendering two runs on three hits. Michelle Escamilla held the Lumberjacks scoreless over the final three innings for her first save.
Humboldt, which out-hit UCSD 5-4, got two hits out of center fielder Dani Randall. Infielder Sammi Gilbert and Hiatt each drove in a run. Relief pitcher Kayla Evans (4-9) took the loss after replacing starter Alyssa Castillo, who completed just one inning.
The two teams play a second doubleheader Wednesday with the first game slated for a 1 p.m. start at Triton Softball Field. Admission is free and both games will be covered by live stats.
The series was originally scheduled to be played Mar. 16 and 17 in Arcata, but an inclement weather forecast for Northern California forced the move to La Jolla.
