TURLOCK, Calif. - The No. 20 UC San Diego softball team shutout Central Washington 5-0 in its opening game of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno Sports, but fell 4-1 and 7-3 to Grand Canyon and Hawaii Hilo, respectively, on Friday afternoon at Pedretti Sports Complex.

UCSD moves to 27-12 on the season. The Tritons face Hawaii Pacific at 11:15 a.m. and Notre Dame de Namur at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

UCSD 5 - Central Washington 0
Kirsten Willmon and Kris Lesovsky went 2-for-4, Charly Swanberg accounted for three RBI and Mya Romero scored twice as the Tritons rallied for all their runs in their final two at-bats and took advantage of a pair of key CWU fielding errors in a five-run victory in their tournament opener.

Michelle Escamilla (6-3) worked five innings for the Tritons, striking out four while limiting CWU to three hits, earning her first victory since March 14. Camille Gaito came on in the bottom of the sixth and retired the final six Wildcat batters in order to earn her third save of the season and ninth save of her career- a new school record. 

After Willmon singled to lead off the sixth, Romero bunted to the left side to move the runner over. However, the CWU third baseman's throw sailed into the outfield, allowing Willmon to take third and Romero to take second. Swanberg followed with a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Willmon. Nicole Spangler singled up the middle to bring in Romero and make it 2-0 in favor of UCSD.

Maria Sykes walked on four pitches in the seventh inning and moved over to third on an errant throw by the CWU catcher when Emily McQuaid attempted to bunt her over. Lesovsky knocked in Sykes to make it 3-0 before Swanberg came through with a two-out, two-run single through the right side to give UCSD its final 5-0 lead.

Grand Canyon 4 - UCSD 1
GCU scored a run in each of the first two innings on RBI base hits by Nicole Upshaw and Stephanie Smith.

Down 2-0 in the fourth, UCSD nearly rallied to tie it back up with three consecutive base knocks. Swanberg doubled to right center, Spangler followed with a single and Caitlin Brown singled in pinch runner Anne Wethe to make it 2-1. Jennifer Manuel came up big with a two-out single to center, but the Tritons could not pull even as GCU center fielder Kara Holtorf gunned-down Spangler at the plate to end the inning.

UCSD once again put the tying run aboard in the six inning, as Romero singled and Brown walked with two out. However, the Antelopes' Kiley Raica (12-5) forced Monique Portugal into a slow roller to the right side to snuff out the threat.

GCU tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on back-to-back-to-back singles and an errant throw by the Triton first baseman to score its first run of the inning. Kelsey Barak lifted a sacrifice fly with one out to make it 4-1.

Gaito (16-5) was credited with her first loss since March 9, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Despite the loss, Gaito registered her 508th career strikeout in the game, passing Leea Harlan (1999-02) for the school's all-time record.

Hawaii Hilo 7 - UCSD 3
The Vulcans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second, helped by an RBI single by Asha Prithviraj, an RBI double by Bryanna Hardy and a two-out, two-run triple by Nicole Alconcel.

In the Triton half of the second, Portugal cracked the first home run of her UCSD career, lifting a two-out, three-run dinger to left center to bring UCSD within two at 5-3. However, the Tritons managed just two hits the rest of the way before the Vulcans added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth.

Portugal was 1-for-3 with three RBI and Spangler was 1-for-3 with a run scored. McQuaid went 1-for-2 with a walk.
