TURLOCK, Calif. - With a lackluster 1-2 start to the Tournament of Champions, the No. 20 UC San Diego softball team rebounded on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Hawaii Pacific at Pedretti Park.
The Tritons improve to 23-12 on the year and will play Notre Dame de Namur at 4:45 p.m. today due to a rain delay. The Sea Warriors fall to 27-13 overall. Both teams are 2-2 in the tournament.
Camille Gaito pitched a complete game for the Tritons, throwing seven
innings while striking out five, allowing only one earned run and
walking no one. She improved to 17-5 on the year.
With bases loaded in the seventh, Kris Lesovsky, who opened the inning
with a single, scored the go-ahead run, 3-2, on Charly Swanberg's RBI
ground out to pitcher Melissa Kirby.
Things got started for the Tritons in the top of the fourth when Maria Sykes' sacrifice bunt allowed Anne Wethe to score from third. Caitlin Brown, who advanced to third, crossed home plate on the next at-bat when Emily McQuaid singled to third base.
The Tritons' 2-0 lead held until the sixth when the Sea Warriors took advantage of two errors. A fielding error allowed Dorian Acierto to reach base. Shortly after Chante Tesoro's single to left field, Acierto and Celina Garces scored on a throwing error to tie the game, 2-2.
Lesovsky went 2-for-4 at the plate while Brown went 2-for-3.
