TURLOCK, Calif. - Coming off a one-run victory and a rain delay, the No. 20 UC San Diego softball team put together a late comeback win over Notre Dame de Namur, 2-1, to close out Saturday's action at the Tournament of Champions at the Pedretti Sports Complex.
With the win, the Tritons climb to 29-12 overall and improve to 3-2 in the Tournament of Champions. The Tritons will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent at noon on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Argonauts drop to 15-18 for the season and 1-4 in the tournament.
With hardly any rest, Camille Gaito pitched 2.2 innings for the Tritons to improve to 18-5. She struck out half of the eight batters she faced and forced ground outs from the other four.
Facing two outs with two runners on base in the bottom of the second, the Argonauts successfully converted a double-steal. While Jenae Reyes stole second, Gina Bologna stole home to break a scoreless tie with the Tritons.
This preceded three scoreless innings as the Argonauts narrowly held onto a 1-0 lead. In the top half of the sixth, the Tritons faced a two-out deficit of their own. Following a wild pitch which advanced pinch runner Annie Heskett and Maria Sykes to second and third, respectively, Mya Romero came through with a two-RBI single up the middle to give UCSD a 2-1 lead.
Romero went 2-for-3 and was credited with the game's only RBI.
