Senior hurler Camille Gaito
registered a season high with nine strikeouts, but the No. 20 UC San Diego softball team fell short against Western Washington 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno Sports.
The Tritons finish 3-3 at the Tournament of Champions while moving to 29-13 overall on the year. WWU is 8-24.
The Vikings scored the game's only run in the top of the seventh inning on back-to-back two-out doubles by center fielder Jessica Carey and pitcher Stephanie Fox. Prior to the seventh inning, Gaito (18-6) had limited WWU to just five hits, one of them for extra bases. Fox (3-5) struck out one Triton and surrendered four hits.
Kris Lesovsky, Jennifer Manuel and Caitlin Brown each went 1-for-3 on Sunday. Kirsten Willmon was 1-for-1 with a stolen base.
The Tritons opened the T.O.C. on Friday with a 5-0 win over Central Washington before falling to Grand Canyon and Hawaii Hilo 4-1 and 7-3, respectively. They rebounded with a 3-2 win over Hawaii Pacific and a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.
UCSD advanced to the Consolation Bracket with their 3-2 record in the first round, but Sunday's loss to WWU ended the Tritons' hopes for a seventh game at the tournament.
California Collegiate Athletic Association play resumes next weekend for UCSD. The team will travel to 2011 CCAA Tournament champion Sonoma State for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, in Rohnert Park.
Friday and Saturday's series with SSU will have CCAA Tournament implications, as the Tritons currently hold the conference's final seed for the postseason, sitting in fourth place with a 20-8 CCAA record. SSU is in fifth place at 12-12 in CCAA competition.
