Two contests into a season-long five-match road stretch, UCSD fell to 6-15 overall and 3-13 in the MPSF. Cal State Northridge, which moved up in the national rankings this week following a two-match sweep at Hawai'i, improved to 10-6 overall and 8-6 in the MPSF.
Friday's match saw only five tie scores and three lead changes, with the host Matadors leading virtually the entire third set after a 3-3 deadlock, to put a capper on the 80-minute tilt. Early CSUN runs of five points for 6-2 in the first and six points for 9-4 in the second erased narrow one-point Triton edges and ultimately propelled the Matadors to victories in the first two games.
Junior middle Fred Stahl came up with six total blocks to lead all players, to go with his five kills.
As a team, UCSD produced 11.5 total blocks, equaling its second-highest output of the season and easily out-blocking CSUN, which came up with just 4.0. The margin in favor marked the Tritons' largest at the net this year.
John Baker was a force for the Matadors, as the senior opposite put down a match-high 17 kills on .500 hitting (17-3-28). Drew Staker added seven kills while Kyle Stevenson got to a team-high eight digs. Sophomore setter Travis Magorien contributed 31 assists, two service aces, four digs and three blocks.
UCSD plays at Pepperdine next Friday, Mar. 15. First serve in Malibu is set for 7 p.m.
