THE SECOND HALF BEGINS
The UC San Diego track and field teams will be competing in two different meets this weekend. A group of Tritons will commence the weekend at the 34th Annual Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday, while other Tritons will wait until Saturday to contend in the Cal State San Marcos-hosted Mangrum Invitational. UCSD will only be competing in the men's premiere hammer throw event on Friday, which kicks off at 3 p.m. The men’s open discus event will be the first field event on Saturday at 10 a.m. for the Tritons. The Triton women will compete in a pair of running events on Saturday, the 800-meter run and 400 hurdles, which are slated to start at 2:57 p.m. and 3:51 p.m., respectively. UCSD's final event on Saturday will be the men's open shot put at 5 p.m.
The Tritons' other contingent of competitors will trek to the Mangrum Invitational. The women’s hammer throw commences the meet at 11 a.m., and jumping events will start with the women’s long jump at noon. The meet will have its first track event of the day, the women’s 3000 steeplechase, at 12:30 p.m. Both the running events and the meet will end with the men’s 4x400 relay at 6:15 p.m.
SUN ANGEL AND MANGRUM OF A YEAR AGO
On this same weekend last year, the Tritons were present at both of these meets. Junior Quentin McWhorter earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the men’s triple jump, leaping 48'6.75" for an 11th-place finish and the third-longest mark in school history for that event at the 33rd Annual Sun Angel Track Classic. Senior Zach Nagengast took third in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 152'11". For the women, junior Lauren Irish nabbed an NCAA provisional qualifier, placing 16th overall in the 400 hurdles (1:02.46), and sophomore Sabrina Pimentel notched a ninth-place showing in the 800 (2:15.35).
During the Mangrum Invitational on the men’s side, senior David Baker (110 hurdles, 16.00), junior Benjamin Berthet (pole vault, 14'11") and senior Ryan Eckert (shot put, 51'1") all won their respective events. Doing the same for the women were juniors Lorato Anderson in the 800 (2:18.21) and Aletha Vassilakis in the javelin (116'4").
PROVISIONAL PROGRESS REPORT
In the first seven meets in which provisional qualifying marks can be acquired this season, the men have earned seven NCAA provisional qualifying marks, while the women have earned eight for a combined total of 15. All seven of the men’s marks come from the field in four events, including the pole vault (Berthet and junior Clint Rosser), discus (Nagengast), hammer throw (senior A.B. Shaheen and Nagengast) and javelin (sophomore Nash Howe and redshirt senior Kiley Libuit). In regards to the women on the track, Pimentel and Anderson have provisional qualifying marks in the 800. Irish earned her provisional qualifying mark in the 400 hurdles. In the field, freshmen Sydney Blakeley and Megan Benham both have provisional qualifiers in the pole vault, while freshman Kristin Sato and sophomore Chantia Justice picked up theirs in the triple jump. Senior Jessica Miklaski ascertained hers in the javelin. All four UCSD student-athletes in the pole vault have NCAA provisional qualifiers.
LEVY, ACTON AND LENEHAN MAKE THREE
Junior Kellen Levy (31:04.87, 3rd), freshman Scott Acton (31:28.22, 8th) and senior Matt Lenehan (31:43.43, 10th) not only placed in the top 10 of a highly-competitive field in the men’s 10000 on March 29 at the Cal-Nevada Championships, but they also entered the UCSD all-time top 10 list for that event, respectively, at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7. With his third-place finish, Levy had the Triton men’s top finish at the meet.
Senior Anthony Heredia scored the men’s top finish on the track on March 30, finishing fourth overall with a time of 3:57.36 in the 1500. Heredia’s time is the fastest one among UCSD runners in that event this season.
Shaheen threw 182’5” in the men’s hammer throw on March 29 to take fourth place overall at the Cal-Nevada Championships. Shaheen's career-best mark of 187'7" occurred at the All-UC Meet, where he won the event, on March 2.
OVER THE BAR WITH B.B. AND C.R.
Finishing in a tie for fourth at the 2013 Cal-Nevada Championships on March 30 were Berthet and Rosser, who both cleared a height of 15’5” in the men's pole vault. Both Tritons earned a personal record of 15'11" at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, where they tied for first place, on March 9.
Throwing over 200’0” again for the Tritons, Howe picked up a fifth-place finish in the javelin after launching the spear 207’6” on March 30. Howe hit a personal best of 212'4" at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, winning the men's javelin throw event on March 9.
MISSILES FROM MIKLASKI
With the Triton women’s top showing at the Cal-Nevada Championships, Miklaski made the podium in the javelin on March 29 with a third-place result after throwing a distance of 135’11”. Miklaski won the javelin and earned her provisional qualifying mark at the 17th Annual Rossi Relays on Feb. 23 with a personal-best throw of 143'4".
PROVISIONAL STATE OF MIND
Upping her provisional qualifying mark on March 30, Sato landed in the pit of the women’s triple jump with a personal-best mark of 39’6”. The Milpitas native, who ended the event in fourth place, moved to No. 3 on UCSD’s all-time top 10 list for that event. Her finish was also the highest showing among the UCSD women during the second day of competition at the Cal-Nevada Championships.
BLAKELEY BRUSHES BY
In the women’s pole vault, Blakeley flowed over a bar that was 11’11.75” off the ground en route to a share of third place at the Cal-Nevada Championships on March 29. Blakeley's best mark of the season came on March 9 at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, finishing third with a height of 12'0.5".
Irish secured an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the prelims of the women's 400 hurdles on March 29, finishing second in her heat and seventh overall with a time of . The Half Moon Bay native later ran to a time of 1:03.76 in the finals on March 30.
RELAYS ON THE RISE
Pimentel, sophomore Ellexi Snover, senior Chelsey Kamson and Irish ran to a time of 3:50.91 in the women’s 4x400 relay on March 30. The time earned the foursome seventh place overall and eighth place on UCSD’s all-time top 10 list. As the second leg of the 4x100 relay, Kamson followed senior Kathleen Hitchens and preceded Sato and freshman Amy Heins, who guided UCSD to an eighth-place finish and a time of 47.56. It was the ninth-fastest time in program history for that event. Irish also finished seventh in the final of the 400 hurdles (1:03.76) on March 30 after taking seventh in the prelims on March 29 with a personal-best time of 1:02.55.
