Offensive Struggles Lead to Defeat Against Humboldt State, 63-50

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego women’s basketball team dropped a second-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) decision at RIMAC Arena Saturday night, falling to Humboldt State 63-50.

UCSD falls to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in CCAA play following the loss, while HSU improves to 10-8 overall and 7-7 in league play with the win.

The Tritons were led by Stephanie Yano’s 11 points, three rebounds and two assists on the night. Erin Dautremont finished with 10 points, giving her 1,009 career points to become the ninth Triton to reach the 1,000 career points mark during the DII era (since the 2000-01 season). She also added five rebounds to her line.

After the Tritons opened the game with a three from Megan Perry, HSU responded with 14-straight points to take an early 14-3 lead. The ‘Jacks continued the strong play till the end of the half and led 27-15 at the intermission.

UCSD was held to four-of-21 shooting in the first half for a mark of .190, while HSU drained 11-of-26 shots for a percentage of .426. The ‘Jacks outscored the Tritons 10-4 in the paint and had 17 bench points to UCSD’s four.

HSU continued to grow the lead in the second half, eventually grabbing its largest advantage of the night of 21 points, 45-24, with 12:02 remaining before finishing out the win, 63-50.

UCSD finished .306 from the floor compared to HSU’s mark of .426. The difference in the game proved to be the inside play, as HSU outrebounded UCSD 42-32 and outscored the Tritons 26-18 in the paint. The ‘Jacks also received 33 points off the bench in the win.

Dana Webster was the third-leading scorer for the Tritons with nine points and added a team-high six rebounds in the loss. UCSD was without leading scorer Miranda Seto on the night due to injury.

HSU was led by 16 points from Jain Tuey and 10 points, six rebounds and two assists from Megan Shields in the win.

After playing four straight games at RIMAC Arena, UCSD hits the road for four conference matchups. The Tritons play at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus on Feb. 7 and 8 before traveling to Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay on Feb. 13 and 15. The game at CSUMB is slated for a 7 p.m. tip, while the other three start at 5:30 p.m.
