Women's Tennis Loses 7-2 Decision at Cal State L.A.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision against No. 20 Cal State L.A. Saturday at the CSULA Tennis Complex.

The loss dropped UCSD to 8-13 on the season. CSULA, which snapped a nine-match losing streak with the victory, improved to 5-9 overall.

The Golden Eagles won all of the doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Leora Hemmerich and Sydney Postal rolled to an 8-3 victory against Kyra Scott Scott and Paula Chou, who are ranked 17th nationally.

Hemmerich, ranked 39th in singles play, upset No. 26 Scott in the No. 1 singles match as well. She won the opening set 6-4 before Scott took the second frame by the same score. In the tie-breaker, Hemmerich won 10-6 to earn the match.

The Tritons picked up singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6, both in straight sets. Tara Vanooteghem defeated Tiffany Leung, 6-2 and 6-2. Lisa Asai downed Samantha Sismundo by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.

On Feb. 24 in La Jolla, UC San Diego defeated Cal State L.A., 6-3.

In the midst of a seven-match road swing, UCSD plays at Point Loma on Wednesday, April 9 (2 p.m.). The Sea Lions, who hold a No. 25 national ranking, were downed by the Tritons, 6-3, on Feb. 11.
