The UC San Diego men's golf team kicked off the 2012 season at the 13th Annual Cal State San Marcos Cougar Invitational this week. The Tritons turned in a strong showing over two days of competition, finishing fourth out of 12 teams competing at the Shadowridge Country Club.
Playing in their first tournament since early November, the Tritons looked sharp, carding rounds of 319 and 301 on Monday and a strong 304 in windy conditions in the final round on Tuesday. UCSD finished with an overall total of +60, 924, coming in nine strokes behind host and third place Cal State San Marcos.
Freshman Jay Lim led the way for the Tritons, finishing with a final tally of +12, 228. The La Canada native carded rounds of 82, 71 and 75 on the par-72, 7,002-yard layout, claiming a share of 15th place.
Lim finished two strokes in front of teammate Lewis Simon, who wrapped up the competition with a 230 following rounds of 79, 76 and 75. His score was good enough for a share of 18th place. Jacob Williams had the next highest finish for UCSD, posting a three-round total of 233 (80-74-79), while Skyler Mednick rounded out the scoring for the Tritons at 238 (83-80-75).
Williams finished in a tie for 28th place, while Mednick claimed a share of 34th place.
Led by the strong play of Ryan Ellerbrook, Point Loma Nazarene won the tournament title with a final score of +26, 890. The Sea Lions carded rounds of 297, 292 and 301 to run away from the rest of the field. Victoria (BC) finished second at +40, 904 (308, 289, 307), followed by CSUSM in third at +51, 915 (304, 301, 310).
Ellerbrook finished at -2, 214 to claim individual medalist honors, posting rounds of 69, 73 and 72. Thane Ringler of The Master's College finished second at +1, 217 (74-72-71), followed by Victoria's Darren Hupfer in third at 218 (74-68-76).
Head coach Mike Wydra and the Tritons will be back in action next week when they take part in the 2012 San Diego Intercollegiate February 13-14 at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista.
