UCSD Moves Up Two Spots, Finishes 11th at Hanny/Stanislaus Invite

TURLOCK, Calif. - Competing in its final tournament before the conference championships next week, the UC San Diego men's golf team finished in 11th place out of 20 teams at the 39th Annual Hanny/Stanislaus Invitational at the Turlock Golf and County Club on Tuesday.

The Tritons began the day in 13th place following rounds of 307 and 299 on Monday, but climbed two spots in the team standings after firing a 296 in the final round. UCSD wrapped up the competition with a final tally of 38-over par, 902, finishing nine strokes behind 10th place Dixie State.

Sophomore Lewis Simon was UC San Diego's top individual finisher, posting a final score of +6, 222 on the 6,641-yard, par-72 championship layout. He carded rounds of 73, 76 and 73 to finish with a share of 26th place overall.

Simon finished three strokes in front of teammate Jay Lim, who a shot a final round 76 to finish at +9, 225. Lim's score was good enough for a share of 39th place. Jacob Williams was UCSD's next-best finisher at +12, 228 (75), while Fredrik Palmer-Picard rounded out the scoring for the Tritons at +13, 229 (74).

Williams claimed a share of 52nd place, while Palmer-Picard finished in a tie for 60th.

Host Cal State Stanislaus, which held a commanding 11-stroke lead over Western Washington entering the final round, shot an impressive 277 on Tuesday to win the team title for the 14th time in the last 17 years. The fourth-ranked Warriors also set a new tournament record at 19-under par, 845.

WWU finished in second place at +4, 868 after carding a final round 289, while Chico State was third at +8, 872 (287) and Point Loma Nazarene was fourth at +20, 884 (293).

Individual medalist honors went to Cal State Stanislaus' Trevor Blair, who shot a 66 on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament at -7, 209. Blair finished four strokes in front of Chico State's Kyle Souza and Hawaii-Hilo's James Hall, who finished tied for second at -3, 213.

UCSD, which was coming off a season-best second place finish at the Fort Lewis Skyhawk Desert Shootout earlier this month, will now head to Paso Robles for the 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships April 23-24.

The Tritons finished sixth at the conference championships in 2011, posting a final tally of +31, 895 at the Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso.
