UCSD Finishes 14th at Otter Invitational in Seaside

SEASIDE, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team finished in 14th place at the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational after carding a 308 in the final round at the Black Horse Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Tritons, who fired rounds of 315 and 301 on Monday, finished with a three-round total of 60-over par, 924. UCSD trailed 13th place Missouri-St. Louis by just one stroke entering the last round, but could not climb up in the final team standings.

Cal State Stanislaus and Western Washington, which trailed day one leader Cal State Monterey Bay by a combined 13 strokes at the beginning of play on Tuesday, rallied to tie for the team lead at 23-over par, 887 through three rounds. The Warriors shot a 295 in the final round, while the Vikings carded the best round of the tournament with a 288 to move up nine spots in the team standings.

Sonoma State was third at +26, 890 following a final round 296, while Nova Southeastern finished fourth at 892 (301), one shot ahead of fifth place Barry at 893 (301).

Sophomore David Smith and freshman Jay Lim were UCSD's top individual finishers after each wrapped up at 14-over par, 230. Smith carded a 76 in the final round, while Lim fired a 77. They were two of five players to finish tied for 43rd place overall.

Smith and Lim finished one stroke in front of teammate Lewis Simon, who carded a 78 to finish with a two-day tally of 231. Simon's score was good enough for share of 48th place overall. Freshman Austin Shuxiau rounded out the scoring for Tritons at 236 following a final round 77. He earned a share of 56th place.

Nova Southeastern's Ben Taylor claimed individual medalist honors at 5-under par, 211. He carded an even 72 after firing rounds of 70 and 69 on Monday. Kyle Souza of Chico State was second at 3-under par, 213, while Barry University's Daniel Stapff was third at 1-under, 215.

The Tritons will wrap up their fall tournament schedule with the Sonoma State Invitational November 7-8 at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
