UCSD’s Mike Wydra to be Inducted into GCAA Hall of Fame
Release: Tuesday 11/29/2011
NORMAN, Okla. - Mike Wydra, the longtime head coach of the UC San Diego men's golf program, will be inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame, the organization announced earlier this month.

Wydra is one of five coaches that will be officially honored at the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Banquet on Monday, December 5 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas.

"It's a tremendous honor to not only be inducted into the Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame, but to be a part of such an amazing class of coaches this year," Wydra said. "So many individuals have played a role in my career, but I definitely owe a huge thank you to my wife, Terrilee, and the over three decades of players that have come through this program. I wouldn't have gotten to this point without all of them."

Joining Wydra in this year's Hall of Fame class will be Arthur Boulet of Bryant University, Ken Hyland of Malone University, Vince Jarrett of Abilene Christian and Odessa College's Jimmy Russell. Gary Hart, formerly of PING, will also be inducted for his contributions to collegiate golf.

Now in his 33rd season at UCSD, Wydra has built a program that has achieved tremendous success and national acclaim at both the NCAA Division II and III levels. His teams have qualified for the NCAA Championships a total of 21 times since he took over in 1980, and in 1993, he led the Tritons' to the D-III national tile on their home course at nearby Torrey Pines.

UCSD has finished second at the national championships five times during Wydra's tenure and captured national third place honors on two occasions. The Tritons last qualified for the National Championships in 2004, finishing 15th overall in the final team standings.

Since taking over the UCSD golf program, Wydra has led the Tritons to top-five national finishes 13 times. He has produced a total of 54 All-Americans and 27 Tritons have gone on to play professionally. He was named the Far West Coach of the Year every year from 1990 through 1999 and, in 1993 he was selected as the Bridgestone NCAA Division III Coach of the Year after winning the national championship.

In 2010-11, Wydra led UCSD to several notable tournament finishes, including a sixth place showing at the 61st Annual SoCal Intercollegiate Championship at the Mission Viejo Country Club.

After the Tritons finished sixth at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Paso Robles, senior Keith Okasaki went on to qualify for the NCAA Central/West Regional as an individual, where he would finish tied for fifth place and earn a berth in the NCAA Championship field for the first time in his career.

The Tritons have competed in four tournaments so far in 2011-12, capping off the fall season with a fourth place showing at the Sonoma State Invitational in Santa Rosa.
