Tritons 10th After Two Rounds at GCU Thunderbird Invite

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The UC San Diego men's golf team currently sits in 10th place after the first two rounds at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational, which is being contested at the Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The Tritons carded rounds of 291 and 290 on Monday to conclude the day at 5-over par, 581. UCSD trails ninth place St. Martin's by just a single stroke entering the final round on Tuesday.

Freshman Jay Lim is leading the way for the Tritons after carding an opening round 74 and then shooting an impressive 68 in Round 2. The La Canada native is currently tied with five other players for 13th place at -2, 142.

Lim has a four-stroke lead over sophomore Lewis Simon, who carded rounds of 71 and 75 to wrap up the day at +2, 146. He currently has a share of 33rd place overall. Freshman Marc Herrmann had the next-best day for UCSD, posting a two-round total of 147 (76-71), while sophomore David Smith rounded out the opening day scoring for the Tritons at 151 (75-76). Herrmann is tied for 43rd place, while Smith is tied for 66th.

Sophomore Jacob Williams is UCSD's fifth player in the tournament and he finished the day at +11, 155 following an opening round 71 and an 84 in Round 2.

Cal State Stanislaus has a three shot lead over Western Washington and host Grand Canyon in the team standings after wrapping up the day at -14, 562 (279-283). WWU and GCU are tied for second place at -11, 565, while Abilene Christian is fourth at -5, 571 and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in fifth at -4, 572.

Western Washington's Nick Varelia and Richie Kernagis of Grand Canyon lead the field individually after finishing the day at -7, 137. Varelia followed an opening round 71 with a 66 in Round 2, while Kernagis posted rounds of 70 and 67. Trevor Blair of Cal State Stanislaus and Eddie DeLashmutt of UC-Colorado Springs are tied for third, one stroke back at -6, 138.

The third and final round on the 6,852-yard, par-72 course will get underway with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
